Used the magnifier to read the tiny letters and numbers on a button cell battery.

Can't remember now if I picked up my Champion, SwissChamp, or Explorer. They were all on my desk.

I think this is the first time that I have used this SAK for its intended use.

Sorry the piccie is lying on its side - I tried to rotate it - But it had no effect :(

That's a particularly nice wine!  :tu:  ...deserving of some SAK treatment.

Used backside Phillips of deluxe tinker to tighten the screws on my gate hinges.
The small blade to open some packages and the pen to write a shopping list.

Found a frozen early 1960s Shakespeare Sea Wonder 2090 FB salsmurfer spinning reel.

VIC CYBERTOOL L to the rescue!

Full disassembly, cleaning, reapplication of reel grease and reel oil. Nothing wrong but hardened grease and some salty sand in the worm gear.

What a reel! Never have I seen so many heavy duty gear wheels in a spinning reel. It’s a beautiful thing built to last many lifetimes. Heavy as hell though! But I’ve got a a couple Penn Bait casters for trolling deep sea (or just dangling Sabiki rigs off a tall pier at low tide), a collection of old Garcia Mitchell’s (including my cherished lefty I was given as a boy) for freshwater, a couple Daiwa ultralights for pan fish, and a couple of fly reels for trout streams. The hole in my line up was a really rugged surf fishing reel. I have tried a some new ones that don’t do it for me. This old SEA WONDER could pull in most anything in the surf, or beyond, and you don’t have to baby it, because it’s so tough and easy to disassemble, clean and put back together.

Voila!

Ready to go into the surf with arguably the most rugged spinning reel ever built.

Thank you Cybertool L!

Used the Manager and Tinker Small to open an old calculator I was restoring. The Manager can actually deal really well with most consumer electronics, especially with the magnetized small Phillips and small slotted screw driver. I decided to use the Tinker Small openers to deal with the case clips though, which were a pain.

Also used the Explorer and Woodsman magnifying glasses for inspecting the chip pin contacts, as they just sit against the pads. I used both just to compared the old vs new to see which was more useful in this type of application.

And of course the beaster had to inspect my work.  :pok:

Must be a slow day today, no other posts.

I used the fish scaler on my SwissChamp to open a letter (I think it makes a good letter opener) and used the big blade to open a package. I had the Explorer on me this evening when I had to open a beer bottle.

Not being a fisherman this seems like it is written in a different language to me - But I can feel your excitement   :pok:    :D
 - And go the Cybertool   :salute:

Yes, I am excited. And yes fishing is as arcane as most any hobby.

This reel is not yet highly valued (and may never be), because it was/is heavy and intended to do double duty—the jobs already being done by heavier duty traditional bait casting reels and the jobs done by lighter duty open faced spinning reels.

Combination reels, like combination knives, are often viewed by the lovers of both objects, as Jack’s of all trades, but masters of none, and so somewhat looked down on.

But I grew up playing many positions in sports, because I was never exceptional at any one thing, so intentionally diverse-use tools probably resonate with the utility player in me more than with persons that had and developed highly specialized talents. I am drawn far more to SAKs than high end flippers. I realize the incredible value of highly specialized tools refined to do one job well, when the task critically requires them. I don’t want a SAK to go in harms way, when a good fixed blade fighting knife is called for. But again I am more drawn to a really good multi tool. Given the choice of three box end wrenches in popular sizes that fit perfectly and a a good adjustable crescent wrench, I always pick the crescent. I regret it sometimes, but I get the job done somehow with the crescent, and never have to shim a too big box end and pray. If attire dictates choice in the morning of a high end flipper or my Cybertool L, the CTL goes in the pocket without hesitation. I have always liked options and redundancy in a complex world.

My Sea Wonder reel is kind of the ultimate set of options for a reel where one can fish all types of water, if I can handle the extra weight. And I can.

The weight conscious can forget this reel. As  I can gladly  handle the extra weight of my CTL instead of carrying a Tinker, I can handle the weight of this reel.

I prefer a stout touring bicycle to an ultralight racer bicycle. I prefer a Chevy Silverado to a Tacoma. And a Chevy 2500 to both. If weight gives me more options, give me weight. I only oppose weight flatly in tools that give me fewer options.

On foot, in the faraway, weight becomes a huge deal. But even then, I prefer shedding weight by leaving behind single use tools and finding multitools and don’t fret about a few extra ounces. My dream backpacking equipment would be a zipper vented, ultralight jumpsuit with a back pad shaped pocket that, when you remove your actual backpack riding on it as a pad, unfolds into a bug proof bivvy you lay down on, add a poncho liner to, zip up head to toe, and add your poncho over the top with some ties and u r ready to sleep. Your clothing is part your tent. Some have already tried this, but not very successfully yet.

There is also a connection to my late father, who was devoted to Shakespeare reels in my childhood. It’s kind of a reconnect with him on some level too.

It’s not for every one, same as etrippers’s bigguns aren’t right for everyone. But to this Yank, there is reassuring margin for error in  overbuilt simplicity with a little extra weight and adaptability; even if performance is not perfect for every situation...IMHO.

Give fishing a try, if you ever get tired of crowds and too much stress.

Pulled a plug on my Stihl string trimmer and filed off some corrosion with the file on the CYBERTOOL L. Then used some 2000 grit wet paper to finish. Time to start carrying a patch of 2000 grit under the file in my SAK.

Just got the game 7th Continent. It's an adventure in a lost continent, in the beginning of last century. The Kickstarter edition came with "bone" dice. Very cool looking, but hard to "read".

https://the7thcontinent.seriouspoulp.com/

My retail copy came with plastic dice. It took a lot away from the 1907 exploration feeling. So...

Get some 10mmx10mm wood cubes, hold them with a 100mm locking plier, mark some roman numerals with a chisel from a Champion, burn them with a small soldering iron and you're ready to feel the atmosphere of the game.

Thanks. Those are not used to roll, they're used to show how many uses an item has left. They're basically just counters.
