Some time ago I picked up a Victorinox Flash with 2GB USB drive. It’s a great tool in a small package and I carry it often. In addition to the USB drive it also has some other excellent functionality. It has a light, scissors, and a pen. All of these come in quite handy for me.
The only thing I didn’t care for was the relatively small capacity of the USB drive. The USB drive is easily removable and easily replaceable. However the replacement USB sticks have been prohibitively expensive. Even today, on the Victorinox website, a 4GB replacement stick is $35.95, a 16 GB replacement stick is a $107.95.
Recently I saw some Victorinox Alox USB drives on eBay for cheap and ended up buying two 4GB drives for a grand total of $21 shipped. When they arrived I was happy to see that one of them was actually the 8GB capacity model.
These USB drives are Alox, and are quite fetching. When I bought them I bought them to see if the USB sticks would fit in my Victorinox Flash. I couldn’t find any physical specifications beforehand but I had a sneaky suspicion they were exactly half as thick. My idea was to put two in my Victorinox Flash instead of one for was less money.
When stacked they are very slightly thinner than the one original. Here is what they look like with two installed.
These knives can be had pretty cheaply on eBay with tiny USB drives like 128MB or 512MB so now you can get one used, upgrade and have a great tool on the cheap.
