Opinions on the Crosscut Please?
on: March 14, 2008, 08:14:58 PM
I have been looking at the Crosscut as a possible EDC it's more of a want than a need to be honest as I already have a swisschamp and a climber for EDC but I would value your opinions .Thanks

I am tempted by one as well.  I will probably get a Micra first though.

I have almost all of the keychain tools available.. If you think you NEED scissors than I would go with the LM Squirt S4 or even a LM Micra.. The SOG's Crosscut tools IMO do not not work well...

As much as it pains me, I have to agree with LM123! :P

The CrossCut has better shears than the Micra or Squirt, but the handles aren't very comfortable dut to thin, almost sharp handle edges, and the implements inside leave a lot to be desired.

I second the sheet metal handles.. Also, the toothpick is pointless!

LOL! Who has a need for a metal toothpick?/! I strongly believe that a replacable wood toothpick holder would be a much better idea! BTW, if you don't use the LM eye glass screwdriver then put a half of a toothpick in it!  :D

Actually, it's a plastic toothpick, but it's still not very good.

Crosscut -vs- Micra

I like the longer scissor length of the Crosscut, but the Micra is better in all other ways. Better blades, better return spring action, better at slipping in and out of your pocket.

Also the Crosscut gear teeth are kinda wide up near the scissors, causing them to sometimes hang up on the paper being cut. The Micra is narrowed down up there and has no such problems.

How about the Shortcut?  I've got one and I really like it.  Don't have a Crosscut or Micra to compare it to though.

Perhaps we should add a keychain scissor-tool shoot out to our list of things for the future?

It's on the list....

The problem is that every time I start to plan one of these shootouts I think of the tools that I don't have, but deserve to be included!  Then I order that particular tool and by the time it arrives, I'm well into something else!   :ahhh

I must be in the minority. I like the Crosscut better than the Micra. But I like the (American made)Schrade Tough Chip better than all of them. Awesome scissors and removable toothpick.

That's funny because I really don't care for the Tough Chip at all!  It's too big for a small keychain tool, it's almost as wide as a SwissCard... That's probably why I never wrote a review of it for the main site- I haven't been able to bring myself to carry the durned thing for any length of time!   :o

Arghh.. should have read this before I ordered my CrossCut. It's on the way from Marc, haha

Anyway, I have both the Gerber ShortCut and Micra, so I guess this makes the circle complete, even if I end up not liking it.

About the ShortCut, it's great in use, but just too bulky I feel. Though the Micra isn't much lighter, it feels very much smaller in the pocket.

Its impossible to beat the Micra in my opinion. That's why they've sold so many. Compact, premium quality, great features. All the other little scissor tools are a distant second.

I really must pick one up to compare to my Shortcut.

My CrossCut just came in the mail together with my Skeletool :D

Anyway, first impression: Doesn't feel as solid as the Micra. The scissors just doesn't have the resistance i feel with the Micra, which makes it seem weaker. The specifications indicate that the Crosscut is slightly lighter, but it's bulkier than the LM, though not much more.

So, I haven't gotten much use of it, just changed it on my keychain. Will try it out for a few days and see how it goes.
