Was this a good buy for $2.26?

No, seriously, I want to know.  edit; Okay, $7.60 incl postage.

I was expecting a beater small tinker, but when I got it out of the envelope just now I noticed the square phillips, then that it had no can-key slot and a nail-file down the side of it. Moving on to the blades, the small one is a clip point and the large blade has the tang stamps pictures below.
The Openers are slightly different to normal too. The opener has a Swiss cross and PAT stamped into it and the caplifter has an angle cut section inside it which has quite an edge on it.
There is no T&T and the scales appear to be nylon but it looks like there was a metal inlay Vic shield which has fallen out.

This was just to be a donor, but I don't want to pull it apart if it's special.

So...  Trash or treasure?

Nice one Peter!¡! As you know, I know hardly nothing when it comes to SAKs but it looks old to me.

I've tried googling, but there wasn't much in the results that was terribly relevant. There was a link to an older one with a ball that went for crazy money on eBay.

I'm not thinking this one is worth $140 like that, but I'd hate to wreck any collector value in it by refurbishing it which it would need to be a user.
I've seen enough episodes of antique roadshow to know that "restoring"  something usually  removes any collector value.
The liners have all cracked at the backtool pivot hole so it has almost no snap. If I'm going to rebuild it I'd make nice brass liners for it. They'd look great with the old tools.

In Steven Dick`s book "The Working Folding Knife" he makes a reference to a Hoffritz stamped Victorinox SAK that he bought and took to Vietnam. He also has a photo of it in the book. When I get home this evening I will get the book out and look closer. I would say you got quite a knife there, money well spent.

It's definitely not trash!

Some of the tool types help to age it a bit, but it's not something I've seen before. Nice score

from reading on here i believe Hoffritz was a store chain that sold SAKs and even had custom designs made for them.

I believe that style of Phillips potentially dates it back to the 1950's/60's.  There are some proper SAK experts who'll be able to give a better answer though.

The file/phillips was available in the 60's. The sakwiki catalogs may help narrow the date down some.

I am looking for one like that if you decide to part with it. 84mm or 91mm?

it's a 84mm. I also have a 91mm too but it doesn't have the same tang stamps. However that one came in the lot of 40 SAKs that I bought which were all "problem children" that the seller couldn't move on their own due to broken scales our bring gummed up etc. That's the lot  I found a small climber in.
The larger one doesn't have the Neil file either.

They would make a nice pair.

Latest info I've found is this...

The can opener with the marking "+PAT" was produced from 1961 until 1971.

Good buy... good buy?

GREAT buy. Sharpen it up and get that wee beasty into the harness again. That is my favorite phillips design, and I love the scraper in the opener.
