I dont 'read' books much, but since I work in the shop most of the day I listen to ALOT of audio books.  Mostly sci fi and dystopian type.  I go though 2 a week.

My current favorite is one called 'Earth Abides' by George R. Stewart written in 1949.   Great book.   :tu:

Ooh, that's good to know Syph, I have that in my reading pile! Is it a kind of Omega man type set up where he's on his own until he meets a woman to spend his life with?

Its based on a small group that 'rebuilds'.  It felt logical and it was nice to read something while thinking.. ya Id do that too, makes sense... etc.  Some of the language is dated due to the age, but I found that added to the feel then took away.  Its one of a handful of books Ive re-listened too and kept on my phone to have a backup listen if Ive got nothing else good.

I used to read a lot, literature mostly but essays too. In the past five years I seem to struggle even finishing reading the newspaper (that's not my only vice, there's also MT.O) :(

Anyway, I've been enjoying reading a few pages of A History of the World in 6 Glasses, by Tom Standage, every night before sleep. Interesting, well written, coincides with the facts I already knew so it must be right :D

Sounds good - I'll bump it up my list.

I feel the same about 'Pattern Recognition' by William Gibson - I have that on audiobook and as it's read by a female it's nice and calming when I can't sleep.

Finished Helter Skelter last night.  Obviously I knew how it ends, but damn some of the stuff in there is chilling.
My next book I found at the library, called Warlord.  It's about Winston Churchill's military career and political career as First Sea Lord and Prime Minister as CinC.  Interesting reading so far, at Omdurman.  I think Churchill is fascinating.  He's one historical figure I'd love to sit and talk to.

I've been fascinated by the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 ever since I saw the movie Zulu as a kid.  I'm surprised I never read this book before, it's a classic.  It starts before Shaka and goes from there.  Very interesting read so far. :tu:

Reading the works of Louis L'Amour.  Recently finished the Sackett saga and started on some of the one-offs that are not a part of any series. There's always time for a good western story.

“Hundre år med hodebry”, a history of the insanity defense in Norway, from the first properly documented case in 1325 till present day. Seems like a good read.

Having just re-watched and enjoyed the film "John Carter" I thought it was about time I actually read the books.  A quick look at Amazon and I found a compilation of Edgar Rice Burrows books for 49p.  I don't want to say it's every book that ERB ever wrote, but it's got to be close.  So straight to "A Princess of Mars" as the first in the Barsoom series.

The Barsoom books are available on Project Gutenberg as well. Lots of good stuff on Runeberg and Gutenberg.

Personally I found the Illiad rather tedious. The Odyssey is a much more entertaining read with modern eyes. All IMHO. Both are of course worth reading as general knowledge, though.

The Iliad is a hymn to life and peace through demonstrating the atrocity of war.

The Odyssey is a narration about what (a) man's wit and determination can achieve, set in an environment full of oddities.

This is just my opinion, of course. I have yet to read those in the 21st century :D
