I've been on an Awl-some kick lately and finding unused features, drivers and implements on MTs and transforming them into awls has been a pretty fun trick.
My latest and last mod of 2012 is a micro sized awl. I've always had a soft spot for the Squirt PS4, it combines many, if not all the micro sized tools I want in a keychain MT. However, the soft aluminum scales stop me from carrying it often. I can't stand the look of rubbed down, anodized aluminum. Give me steel scales any day.
In any case, here it is. The small driver, which is too small for anything useful, and not small enough for glasses, but perfect for a small awl. So the formula to make an awl is this, find a medium/long driver, taper edge with flat end mill, then cut edge with a 1/8' ball mill. That creates a concave edge that can be sharpened time after time and is a clock wide cutting motion.
This soft pine is no match for the micro-awl
and it folds back nicely with no edge to get cut on
Can't wait to see what 2013 brings for the MT world, with SHOT just around the corner, you know that I'll be ready with a file, sandpaper and a grinder ready to make anything work!
