Leatherman Wave Piviot Question
on: January 05, 2013, 02:12:30 AM
I have a Leatherman Wave and I need to tighten one of the main pivots. The serrated blade and saw are a little loose. It came from the factory this way. I have seen that you need to heat the pivots to release the Loc-Tite. All I have is a propane torch (used to sweat copper), would that work or is it too much heat? Or can I skip the heat?

You can skip the heat if you have the correct set of wrenches. :) So does your Wave have 5-point, or 6-point security torx screws?
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

As long as you have a T10 security torx id say the best thing to do is remove the male side of the bolt leaving the axle through the blades and pliars head so you dont have to line up the copper washers. Reapply the loc tite and tighten it back down.
God made man but Samuel Colt made them equal.

The wave is a lot easier to line up the bronze washers :)
Why stop now?

I twisted (damaged) a T10 bit loosening up a pivot on a Charge (before I found out about using heat to loosen the loctite). It wasn't a real high quality bit, but wasn't rubbish either.  These little bits don't have much metal in them because of the hollow in the centre for the security pin.

It doesn't need much heat to loosen the loctite.

Well I got them adjusted. They turned really easy without heat. Now the question is for the cost of the tool why did I have to perform this repair. Seems like quality control is spotty.
