Question about how to loosen a multitool!
on: March 13, 2017, 01:12:06 AM
I just picked up a cheap multitool at my local Ace Hardware, and it seems like a decent one, except on one side, the tools are too hard to open. Does anybody know what kind of tool can turn these screws? I tried a pair of needle nose pliers, but they slip, and you can see the result!  I know somebody owns a tool with these type of screws. Can anybody help? Thanks in advance!!

Have you tried heating it to break the loctite? Grind in a channel on a large (8mm?) flat head bit?

I was able to turn it a little with the pliers, but the tool did not loosen, and the pliers keep slipping. I am guessing you turn it left to loosen? Would a Dremel tool be able to grind a channel on it? My wife  has one, but I am not sure she has attachment that can do it. Certainly there HAS to be a dedicated tool or bit to do this??

I think a set # 8 or 9 from loki-mobile might work:

Yes you can cut a channel using a dremel.
The custom wrenches greg linked to are for gerbers.
On gerbers the post end is keyed into the handle so only the screw side will turn.

A hacksaw might work well for cutting channels.

Thanks everybody. I am not sure what I will do at this point. The tool was $16.00, and I had a $10.00 coupon, so I only paid 6 dollars for it!  :D.  I doubt if they would let me exchange it since the screws on it now are a bit chewed up, so it is mine. If I had another coupon, I would even consider getting another one. I can still use it, but it is pretty hard to open up the tools on the one side, and it still seems decent for the money. A lot of these cheapies have over polished parts, but this one does not, and both blades actually are sharp out of the box!
