Does anyone own/use a type of outdoor/camping water boiler called a Kelly Kettle? Do they really work as advertised etc Be interested to hear your experiences with using them in the environment they were intended
It seemed like a good idea at the time.

I like the look of it as well.  I'm not sure it would be much use on a hiking trip though, to bulky IMO.  I read an account of someone knackering one when it was put back on the fire tray once it had been emptied.  Hot fire+aluminium-water=melted aluminium.  :(

Melting bad :(

They seem like a great idea, with good fuel efficiency.  They do look bulky though, and you'd need a second pot to actually cook anything with them.

You can get an accesory thingy that fits on the top of it to rest a small pan on to cook with. It seems too bulky to take hiking etc, car or bike camping tho', where you did'nt have to carry it would seem ok.

Well, this might be a little late, but my wife got a me a Kelly Kettle for my birthday a few months ago. I have used it a few times, and I really like it. Its a great little waterboiler (i have the smallest one) for daytrips and short hikes. In just a few minutes you have 0,5l of boiling water ready for a nice cup of tea or some freezedried food. It is however a bit bulky to carry around, but so is a fuel burner with a kettle and fuel.
Here is a picture of it in action.

thanks.
It was actually raining when I took this picture. It had been raining the last 1,5 hours and I was soaking wet. That big cup of hot cocoa tasted like heaven.
Without the kelly kettle the hike would have been a miserable one.  :)

There is a smaller Swedish military cooker called a Volcano stove - cheap and readily available if you want something highly portable and light.

I've had one for a couple of years now and would recommend them for anyone who wants something quick and simple to pop in a sidepouch on a day out. Use twigs etc for fuel, or wax soaked corrugated cardbord rolled into an old shoe polish tin (this will fit in the bottom of the stove). You can boil the alu bottle full of water or decant some water into the alu cup provided. It all packs into the cylindrical stove very neatly.

Not to take anything away from the Kelly Kettle! My friend showed me hers the other day and I was very jealous.

I've been considering the M Kettle for a while now.

There is also a Ghillie Kettle - I like that they are hard anodized and have a metal cap instead of a cork...not sure if it is a threaded cap though.

Kelly kettles are really only good for boiling water, not great for anything more (cooking and reheating are possible, just not ideal) so there is a fair amount of 'bulk' for the usefulness.
BUT it's real FIRE ! all the fun of a bonfire and a cuppa too ! and you can do it in more places cos it doesn't 'look' scary to others, i use mine while fishing and i love it.

perhaps it's just me but i do get a buzz out of collecting some dried twigs and rubbish and turning it into a warm brew for no cost. maybe i'm a closet 'tree hugger' or maybe i'm just a 'tight wad' ?

I do have a kelly kettle, and agree with what you've said. There are a couple of options for being able to cook on one, but they're not ideal. That's why I got my Wild Woodgas Stove Set which is more weight, but less bulk and far more versatile. It's also possible to add an alcohol stove (or esbit tabs) to the set up for areas which aren't safe for real fires or where fuel is scarce. I've not played with it a huge amount, but I do think it's a better option for pack carry - whereas the Kelly Kettle only gets used at the boat or car carried

The M Kettle to me does look a nice option, but again is limited to boiling duties really. The Swiss Volcano Stove looks a nice gizmo, and I have been tempted to get one to play with, but I'm not convinced it'll do anything any better than my other options. With my Kelly, the Wild Woodgass, and my Jetboil I think I've pretty much got everything I want and need (for now anyway  :D )

I have two Kelly kettles, one in use and one spare and they work wonderfully well. I have used straw, newspaper, twigs and even dry sea weed to heat mine. Something I made for mine (which I have currently misplaced) was a wire mesh ring which fitted the lip of the burner can on 4 legs bent to fit inside but sitting slightly above the can to let air flow.Using this I can actually cook using pots or pans simply by resting them on top. I feed the fire through the hole.

If I can find it ( just moved house) i'll post a phot.

That volcano bottle idea is basically the same idea as the Guyot Designs stainless steal bottle with a camp cup with a coffee can cooker, I'm wondering if you can use the ss Guyot bottle in replace of the volcano bottle? I think that would be sweet! I'm just not a fan of aluminum, and that cork, ahh, I'd rather have a better seal. any idea if this is posable? Or any sizeses on that volcano? JR

Ok now I'm really curious this is what I found, now the guyot bottle is 3-1/2 x 8", but will it fit in a water bottle attachment to hook on the bag? JR

Flask has Corked fluid stopper
Everything nests for compact storage and portability
Aluminum stove, bottle, and cup
Flash holds just short of 1 liter or about 32 fl oz
Cup is 16 fl oz and fits ontop of the stove for cooking
Each is 10 x 5 inches and weighs 14 ozs
Lightweight aluminum mess kit for backpacking. Corked flask fits into stove and cup snaps ontop of kit to keep water from leaking in backpack.
