Backpacking hammer
on: January 16, 2013, 02:01:21 AM
I know there are many outdoor enthusiasts on here who go backpacking, and I was wondering what you use for a hammer to hit in tent stakes? I usually bring no kind of hammer and use a combination of my hands, feet, and maybe a rock to get the stakes into the ground. A lot of campsites I backpack to have very soft soil that is under pine trees and I can just push them in with my hand, but when the soil is hard or rocky what ultralight or at least light enough for backpacking hammer or hammer alternatives do you bring? P.S. this makes me want a MUT for the hammer even though I don't own a gun!

Rock, branch, the back of a hatchet or tomahawk, the butt of knife. Usually a rock.

Rocks are the original multi tool aren't they! Axe would work great but I don't bring one, just a saw.

Yeah, if I were going to do it, I'd bring an axe with a backside hammer. Good double tool.

But yes, I usually use a rock or handy piece of wood.

Doesn't Fiskars make a new hammer/saw/hammer?

A MUT would be great but the striking surface is pretty small unless you have large peg heads. (Weird to write)

I can't remember where I saw it. Maybe it wasn't Fiskars. I know it had a detachable blade and the backside was an axe/hammer.

Thank you for telling me of its existence! Now I am on a mission to find it and add it to my want list!  :tu:

Just to warn you. It's not small. It's Nearly a full size wood saw.

I think Gerber has a hatchet with a hammer and a hollow composite handle that a saw hides in. Or was it Fiskars?...

Here is the tool that Eric was talking about.  It's made by Zippo.  There was a thread on it in one of the forums a while ago, but I don't remember if it was in here, or in the Axe Hole.

I usually bring a full tang knife which would do the job if I for some reason couldn't find a rock or heavy branch.

I've recently become enamored with the Condor Lochnessmuk knife...  The big swell on the back of the tip of the blade might make a reasonable impromptu hammer for tent stakes.

I'll use the poll of a hatchet if I have one on me, but most likely it'll be simply a stone, branch or gently standing on it.  Careful not to bend your pegs by doing that though.

Just saw (no pun intended) the Zippo 4 in 1 Woodmans video too.
Wouldn't mind having one though. $79.95, ouch.  :ahhh

Just use the hyperlink button in the tool panel when you write your post, then past the URL into the brackets the button puts in.

Back on the topic of the tool, I'd be willing to try one, but not at the MSRP...

$55 maybe. Better be quality steel, and come with a free Zippo.  :D
Wonder what the warranty is like.

That'd be reasonable... It'd be about the same as a Sven Saw and a good hatchet.  What I don't like about this tool is how it places your fingers inside the cutting space... I'm not fond of bashing my knuckles into the log I'm cutting...     so you effectively loose a couple inches of cutting stroke of the blade.
