How about a new Crunch?
on: January 16, 2013, 12:38:54 PM
I mean, its been around for more than a Decade and it still goes strong in sales. Its one of the most innovative multitools ever made.
Dont you think, that it would be possible to improve on that one?
Perhaps have a version with customer-exchangeable tools, have a bitholder in one handle instead of those flatheads, have an outside opening one handed blade...

Or let us be crazy: Have a stapler built into the handle which currently holds the tools. You could use it as an office stapler when the pliers are folded down or use it as a hammer-tacker when the handles are opened up.

That's not gonna happen, I recon...

That it already has ;)

But besides that, it could use an update, I guess. OHO blade would make it a lot more versatile, I recon :)

Well, i didnt mean a bitholder but a bitstorage where you can put some std 1/4" bits.

You mean something like the extra bit in a Skeletool?

That would be pretty cool. Enough room for 5 hex bits or so. Would save me from carrying the little sleeve of bits I toss in my pocket.

I have to say.......sorry

As much as I respect Leathermans ingenuity in designing the Crunch - I mean, seriously you would have to be one egghead to conjure that up.

I did try to EDC the silverline clone for a while - I wouldn't risk damaging my REAL Crunch, so tried the clone.

But out there in the real world, it's a real pain to deploy, use etc etc. I'm not knocking it at all. Just sayin'

A fantastic piece of engineering no question.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

It already has that capability

Well, of all the implements you could have chosen to visually explain to us your idea......

.....you chose the fish-hook-disgorger/descaler

I'm sure any fish worth his salt would rather spit out the offending barb and throw himself in to flames of hell (The Pan) and burn for all eternity than suffer the humiliation of being mauled by this pointless piece-de-art

Thats what i thought. I dont think that the toolset in the crunch is that usable anyway: A short blade with the sharp part on the inside?

I imagine an outside opening OH blade and a fixed t-shank holder on the outside to be very usefull.

Get rid of the lanyard ring (pointless when your using the screwdriver) and find a way to sneak a  scratch awl in the mix get rid of the small or medium flathead with the ring and flathead gone an awl I think would fit and I would make a straight blade option as well
Using the crunch for construction use I don't need a oho (I do like them though) and an awl should be standard as with a dedicated Philips head which it's got

Well, the multi tool is an interesting lesson in economics; in that there is always a "budget ceiling" with regards to room and weight, so its interesting to see how efficiently things are packed into any particular tool.  The skeletonization principle is one that I'd hate to see applied to real economics however...

If Leatherman made a stapler, I'd buy it, because nearly every damned stapler I've used has eventually jammed up and caused a good deal of frustration, but I wouldn't want one on a multi tool, any multi tool.

I'm excited about gradual innovations (that seem to occur much too slowly) such as the all-locking multitools, and skeletonization. I'm sure exotic metallurgy, micro-machining and pure innovation will continue to surprise us in years to come.
