I hate Word!
on: May 06, 2008, 11:34:30 PM
Having been a fond user of OpenOffice (OO) for the last year or so, i had forgotten how annoying MS Word was! Had to reinstall it tonight as i got sent a bit of coursework that wouldn't format properly in OO. Not the fault of OO though, it was the way MS Word had formatted the pictures! Instead of doing a proper crop of the pictures it had basically just hidden the "cropped" portion, so when OO opened the file it got the full picture in a box the same size as the cropped picture...highly annoying! Stupid MS not being able to code properly!!

If anyone understands my rant then good, if not just ignore me and continue on your way :D

Turn it off!  It never comes back.

I agree, Word blows.

Good man! It isn't quite perfect but at least its revisions are getting better and better and are much more frequent than MS ever were!

I must admit that I still like Outlook and Excel, but OO is much better for everything else.

Do you use Outlook for the organising functions or email? If email i would put forth Thunderbird if for organising stuff i wouldn't have a clue what to suggest as i don't organise myself! Excel has some advantages but Calc isn't too far behind :)

I use Outlook for both.  I prefer Excel because I write a lot of VBA script at work.

Stick with Outlook then, makes sense to only use one program :) And there you mention one of the advantages of Excel, wonder if its in the pipeline for OO ? I don't tend to use scripts that much but it does come in handy occasionally :)

If I had a nickel for every time I swore at, threatened to kill, fumed at the mouth, or was otherwise angered by Word in the couple decades I've used it, I'd be nearly as wealthy as its damn creator.

I hate Word, but that's the way I get most article and review submissions, so it's a necessary evil for me.  I have numerous different word processors, but my favorite has always been Corel's Word Perfect.  Unfortunately, it seems to be dying off as well, so I may not use that much longer.

Just a word of warning to anyone doing any content publishing on the Web- if you copy and paste any Word text into your site software, be ready to edit out a lot of formatting stuff that only shows on the front end, and even then, only in Internet Explorer.  One would think that Microsoft's products would work better with eachother than that...  ::)

Yeah MS Word can be a pain in the arse. I've always wanted to slap the person that came up with the idea of that animated Paperclip :P  Which version of Word you running Ryan, it isn't the new 2007 is it?... I'm not a fan of the new Office 2007 stuff. We have all the 2007 at work unfortunately ::) but I loaded OO on the PC that I use the most there :P

OO currently has a Basic script language, but it uses a different API than Office.  Some of the object structures are different, as is some of the syntax.  You can load Office scripts into OO, but they won't work until you manually change them to fit OOs parameters.
