Swiss Army Knights Forum. Why?

I was not in the original knights forum but joined, due to peer pressure

, when it was relaunched.

I logged in today and realised that I had not logged in in 11 months..

There seemed to be very few posts in it.... The SAK sub-forum here is thriving...

What is the point of it?
Is it left from the Knifeforums era?
Is it better in something, compared to a thread in the SAK forum here?
Do you get anybody there that you will not get here?
Is it just so as to encourage people to join the Multitool.org forum?
Is it better for communicating directly to people compared to the PM here?
Is it for making groups come together?

I'm in line at Costco right now so I really can't answer this right now, but there is an answer and when I get to a keyboard I'll respond properly.

For now though I'd like to point out that Swiss Army Knights is not a forum...

I logged back in after quite a while and it didn't seem that much had changed. There are some very cool pictures on there tho. To me, it's a great place to share SAK pics...

Swiss Army Knights was a continuation and expansion of what we'd built at SOSAKOnline and was supposed to continue the monthly SAK articles and bring a Facebook style social network in so that members could discuss things in the articles and generally SAK related.

We went with a social network type interface because Facebook is pretty popular these days and it seemed like maybe the forum format was dying out. We put it together so we could enjoy the best of both worlds. Unfortunately I have not had the time to properly manage Swiss Army Knights and so it is floundering.

One of these days...

It is a shame really. Maybe if it was part of facebook it would have worked better.

I didn't want Facebook, I wanted more than Facebook, kind of like what we have here- the social end of things, the article section (reviews here), the Wiki (SAKWiki is hugely more popular than the Multitool Encyclopedia) and so on. We have FB groups for each of these, but really, why should I contribute to making Mark Zuckerburg (slightly) more wealthy?

IMHO, Swiss Army Knights is the future of SOSAKonline. I'm pretty sure Grant explained in depth the reasons for moving away from SOSAKonline, which he ran for many years, I believe it was due to knifeforums being purchased by a magazine publisher, and to avoid any legal/ownership issues, he decided a new community was the way forward.

The original functionality in SOSAKonline with comments and SAK of the day pictures led us to think we needed a more integrated system like Facebook. As Grant said, not a forum, but rather a community. We also had to do something as the SOSAKonline software had grind to a halt after many years of neglect, and the fact that most of the modules were no longer supported in new versions of the site software... with no real way to migrate/update or repair, we decided to eliminate that part for now.

We did manage to migrate users and main article content, however the content requires a certain amount of manual clean up, and thus many man hours of revising it as there is quite a lot of content! Since most of the core staff were busy with that infernal Real Life^tm and Day Job^tm stuff we pretty much left it hanging. We also made sure we would not miss out on the Facebook generation by including the ability to use a Facebook login.

Here we are months down the line, and it's probably time we picked up the reins again, and set the horse back in motion. It helps a lot that my employment situation has changed, and I have less Day Job^tm bullsmurf interfering with my efforts. I do however have a lot of projects on the go, with a lot to catch up on, so you'll understand if this doesn't happen overnight.

Micah will have more details on that, but I think a lot of the work includes cleaning up some of the existing articles so they fit within the new format.

Not sure if this fits here or what. Is there some way to move the Victorinox and Wenger catalogs from SOSAK over to the SAKwiki? It would be helpful if they were all together. Also they probably need to be saved in a more permanent locality.
