Is it possible to have nice things?
on: January 22, 2013, 09:42:56 PM
So seeing as how I'm a relatively new car owner, (about 7 months now) is it possible to own anything nice without everyone else ruining it on you?

I my case, my 2007 Focus which was relatively unscathed when I bought it, now seems to have some mysterious scratches (which I didn't inflict) that are in strange places you wouldn't expect a rub or a bump in associated with the typical bad parking job...  :ahhh :bnghd: hopefully they buff out.
The difficult we do immediately, the impossible takes a little longer.

I think I gave up on new and nice years ago! Something always comes along to mess it up ::)

If you've kids it happens even quicker. Living where we do, I fully expect the car to be damaged one way or another so I try not to get too furious about it.... I try >:D

Even less time if you have a puppy....

Welcome to the frustrating world of car ownership.  You spend money on something decent and some smurfhole comes along and scratches it up for you.  I think every person should be allowed to carry around a blunt axe for the rare opportunities you get when you catch some son of a bitch scratching your car.  I also feel that it is perfectly acceptable behavior to cut open their stomachs, grab an end of their intestines, tie them to my bumper and see if there really is 25 miles worth in there.

For some strange reason people think I am a bit overboard on this, but it is the one thing that pisses me off faster than anything else in life.

I have never owned a new motorcycle.  Why?

I can't stand the thought of the first scratch or ding on it.  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh

By buying used, I figure it's already been dropped or scratched before I got it, and the owner had it touched up beforehand. :D

(Of course, my Multistrada only had 800 miles on it when I bought it, but at least it gave me a reason not to obsess...)

If someone scratched my Jeep I'd kill them!  That is of course if I could find the scratch they made in the mix of all the tree branch/bush scratches that cover both sides   :D

Honestly I could care less if someone hit the Jeep, or even our new car, but that's only because I don't really like it.  Now, if my wife had of bought a Jetta (like I was hoping), I'd lose it if someone scratched/dinged it!!

It really does seem impossible to buy something new (like a car) and not have something happen to it.  It's like they're a magnet for destruction.

I felt the same way about my Jeep.  I'm not happy when it gets scratched, but with a Jeep they are character marks.  Of course, let's see if that's how I feel about scratches on the new one!

a good buddy of mine, who I really wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of, (even though i am a lot bigger than he) spotted two young 'scamps' helping themselves to powertools from his garage/workshop. It is unusual to hear that someone was in the right place at the right time i know  :o
he is now waiting to find out if the 'little darlings' (in their late teens) will be pressing charges  :(

I with Mr Whippy here on this. I always buy used. Except in 1988 when I bought a new Ford Ranger. Looking back I wish I had never done that.

The older you get (at least in my case), the less you sweat the small stuff, and the more you focus on what matters most (Gerber Dimes, for example).   :tu:

This reminds me of a story a friend told me. He and a group of mates bought an old banger to drive to Portugal. They parked up at a nice beach and heard a thud in the side of the car, as the door of a large mercedes parked opposite swung into the bodywork. My mate kicked the door of his car open full pelt at the mercedes in retaliation! However as the mercedes door was a good foot longer than the bangers door, it missed completely and swung off the hinges! They spent the rest of the trip driving around without a door, and having to balance it back on when they parked up.

5 months after i got my jeep soft top back in 08 some smurfing smurfhole cut my passenger side window. No attempt at getting in just cut to be a smurfhead.

When i had my chevy s-10 back in 2002 i went to lunch and noticed my tailgate and spare tyre gone.  >:(

Same truck got keyed after i fired some jackasses for stealing when i worked for Target. Target got em on tape and i went down a filed some paperwork at the constable office.

just like any EDC, if you dont get any wear and tear, youre probably not using it enough.

but i agree. i have had door dings within the first few months of purchase. nothing infuriates me more than imagining the prick that did it.

Tailgates are worth big money here as they are the first things to rust on a truck.  It's very common for them to be stolen around here.

about 10 years ago someone broke the passenger window on my car (about $105 to get fixed) to steal about $4 in loose change from the centre console.

I think it should be legal to beat the smurf out of anyone you catch messing with your investment.

Driving without a door. my mom and I were going up a hill toward home and the tail gate fell off. I said what you gonna do. She replied duh pick it up, I replied I'd leave it. I wouldn't get out and help her load it as kids I went to school with were behind us. That was years ago though.

ifin i catch someone trying to lift my tailgate i'll give options..  >:D

1. asswhoopin'
2. let me slam your hand in the tailgate..then you can walk away.
3. hold at shotgun for police.

in reality as i don't want to get shot or stabbed i'll just grab the shotgun and call police. Don't really want to kill someone for breaking into a vehicle even though in Texas you can.

Make sure there are no witnesses. Hit the jackass hard, fast and often.  Then when he's lying on the ground moaning, pull out a Magic Marker and write "I will not smurf with other people's smurf ever again."

If they're was someone deliberately scratching it yeah I'd go mad, not on purpose well accidents happen and my car had a big scratch when I got it so I wouldn't really mind

And spitting in your face causes no actual damage, so why is that a bad thing?

It's a matter of respect.  I have a major investment and I go to efforts to maintain that investment.  If someone else scratches or dents your car, deliberately or not, they are disrespecting you.  That is very much not cool.
