STOP IT!

I actually like serrated blades - they really do work when something has to be cut in an instant - but like most I truly hate the combi blade that seems to be Gerbers favourite at the moment - hence why I won't carry it.
I don't claim to know it all, but what I do know is right.

I'm okay with a completely serrated blade if the tool already has a completely plain edge. But not by itself, and CERTAINLY not semi-serrated.

The thread title is in all caps intentionally. I am shouting it. Actually, I'm SCREAMING it!

SMURF semi-serrated blades! Smurf them right in the ugly smurfs!

I really do try to see things in the best possible way, but looking at the blade on the Wingman that I just removed reminded me what a stupid idea this blade style is.

And... every stinkin' tool I got for a while seemed cursed to have this unholy chimeric monstrosity.

Not that I have strong feelings about this or anything.  :D

+1 not a fan of CE blades.  Maintenance and sharpening are such a pain.

I am, by no means, a CE/ SE blade fan Lynn. I do believe though, they do have their place in everyday use, if required. My everyday use doesn't require either

I agree.  All serrated or no serrations.  Combo blades really tick me off.  I won't buy a tool that has one any more.

I'm OK with it in certain circumstances.  If there's only room for one knife, and the tool is not for primary use, such a knife can work fine in a pinch.

Bought this semi-serrated K503x on purpose, for that reason. CM-154 blade, can opener, slide-out carabiner, and a large bit driver. Pocket clip too.

Only have issues with the bit driver, it folds when used. Bad QA there. Leatherman should of been consistent and made it a lock-back too.  :ahhh

Free handed it, but I measured the distances and used rounded bits to get the curves right. It's my second SE ever.

Once it's mounted, it'll be unstoppable. I did some cardboard testing just holding the blade, it did a pretty good job.

I don't tend to like combo edged blades either ... but I can usually tolerate them. There are certain jobs where I reall do not want any serration though, like for cutting my apple

I concur with Lynn, these serrations are so difficult to resharpen, even with the right tools.  I prefer a plain edge for my purposes.

I do like serrated blades on their own, but the combo blades are a different story.  Like others have said, serrated are good for cutting through something quickly, which is good for emergency situations (and cardboard :)).  However, they are harder to sharpen, especially if you are not skilled in doing so (like me).

I prefer having one of each blade like the Rebar and Charge has.  I do have some with combo blades though, like the Spirit, Freestyle and PST II and they work fine.  I just really can only sharpen the PE portion of those blades (although the Spirit's "butterblade" is too tricky for me due to its "unique" design)

I agree with you Lynn :salute:
I suspect that they make the CE blades because they look cool, and cool knives sell better. Atleast until the buyers realize that a CE sucks. The biggest problem is that 99,9999999 percent of their custormers isn't a member of this forum, and will probably never realize this.   ;)

Lynn,

That is EXACTLY my feeling.   If I want a PE I don't want serrations messing up the cut.  If I'm cutting cord or cardboard, I want straight serrations and don't want PE action!

Put the two together and I don't want the flippin' blade at all!

Oh, and Metro:  Yes, you're definitely a show-off. In the best possible way.  :) :tu:

Looking cool, Metro. :tu:

As for semi-serrated a.k.a. combo blades, I hate them. But a some time ago I read a survey, can't remember where anymore, which stated the combo blades were outselling the PE and SE blades. The general public buys them for some reason. They are disliked on most knife/tool related forums but the sales dictate the market. I'll try to remember and find that survey.

"Oh, that looks smart, then I'll have both a serrated and plain edge!"  :mn:

Serrations are evil. They only belong in weird, highly specialized tools I know nothing about. As for knives, just give me a proper PE without recurve!
