Sportsman file on 91mm/93mm
on: January 29, 2013, 04:35:10 PM
Hello everyone

I would like to put a 84mm file (or a wenger file) on a 91mm or 93mm sak.
Is there already a known solution for the hidden nail nick problem?

My (at the moment completely theoretical) solutions would be either file the tang in a different angle, solder a small nub on for a higher resting nail nick or solder the file blade to a small knife tang...

Any thoughts?

If you go with filing, take it very slow. You'll be surprised how little metal you have to remove to change the closed angle of the blade.

Just wondering why not put a 91mm file on it???
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

I shaved some off a nail file and got it to angle ok, but then it had very little snap.  Using a custom spring was the only way I got it to sit right and have good snap too.  Kind of a pain, but maybe if you dont take off as much as I did the snap will be better.

I always found the 91mm range to have the most disappointing variety of blade layer tools. ???
Say my name.

Which one do you mean? I don't like the metal file for nails and it takes up a whole layer.
Is there another 91mm file that I don't know of?

I already tried to use a 58mm file as backtool, but thats not really adequate either...

After playing around with the tools some more, I'm thinking about carving an opening in the scale/liner to access the file...

Yes I was thinking about the metal file not the nail file.

Somewhere on sosak there was a pic of someone who used a set of 58mm scissors as a backtool.  I thought that was a neat idea, but probably not that handy to use.

Edit, found one here, but not the one I remember finding.

Okay, that's cool.  I was thinking about this last year but never got around to trying it. Good to know it's do-able.  I think I might have a go at one tonight when I get home.

I remember that - didn't think they would be at all easy to use, but that doesn't mean it's not worth doing for fun :D

Neil made a 91mm with 6 bottle openers I think :D

yes i wonder how difficult or easy it would be to use the scissors back there.

I wonder if one could put a 58mm file there too with a spacer

They would be just fine there for trimming fingernails.
I'd imagine that they would be easier to use if you open them past 90 degrees like in the pic' and use your finger to operate them like a trigger rather than using your thumb as per normal.

Make some of those:

and sell them...

The file as backtool is very possible, I just didn't have the patience to do it nicely.
I'll try the sportsman file with an opening in the scale and will post pics!

FYI:
I tried the sportsman file on a 91mm in place of the small blade and grinded an opening for the nail nick into the liner and the scale.

I don't like it very much.

- I found it difficult to grind the scale (the plastic melts)
- The scale was a new-style-hollow one, which leads to a gap between liner and scale
- The pen doesn't fit anymore, because there's an opening now...
- Yet another break in the grip

So, all in all, maybe if you used a custom (e.g. wood) scale and drop the pen, it works, but I'd rather mcgyver some scissors on a 84mm than that to have a manicure set with me. Or, very oldschool and un-mod: carry a classic ;-)

Or a 74mm Executive and have the best nail-file on a SAK and better scissors than a Classic.

I am very undecided on that issue :-)

I think both files work about equally well because I like the texture on the classic-ones more, but the Executive-one is longer, but feels a bit like the file on the 91mm metal saw..

In the scissor departement the classic is far superior for me. I like to cut the little pieces of skin next to my fingernails and there the smaller scissor is the best!
