the MT.o gods at work ?
on: January 30, 2013, 06:07:06 PM
I send a PM to another member earlier today, and my language might have been a tad more colourfull than I would have used on the open forum  when i read my message later 'someone' has cleaned up my naughty words  :tu: (and they weren't bad ones.... honest!)
I could probably do with this facility in the real world too, sorry

We have a smurf filter that does that. :serverloft: We can't and wouldn't ever read private messages from members. They are called private for a reason. ;)

I do it all the smurfing time. People who don't know me stare at me for a moment then start laughing and assume I have small children.

So good to hear it is not only me that uses smurf in the real world.  Question if I type in smurf will it get turned into something naughty?............ Oh well guess not.

Don't forget salsmurfer....  :)  I've been a bit surprised at times what words DON'T get caught by it.

Aye. Ran into a word that I shouldn't of used, totally out of character. Read it and thought, oh smurf! Quickly edited it. And yes, we do type smurf in at times. Wonder if any of the English words that are considered naughty in other parts of the world get smurfilized too?

Edit: Nope... they went through...

I'm easily trained, I'm already typing in the actual word s m u r f so that I can see what my post will look like post swear filter.

I have to admit to using smurf as a curse word now,but mind you I also use ones from BSG,and from the Judge Dread comics(Jovus Grud popped out today).

What deeply worries me is the number of times I wish I could insert MTo smilies into 'normal' conversation

I know we are just having fun here, but I would like to say something I haven't said in a while.  Privacy is one of the few things I take seriously, and I don't believe there is a way for me to read anyone's PM's.  Whoey might be able to tell us a way, but I really don't want to know what it is.

In this day and age enough people are digitally spying on everyone that you shouldn't have to worry about it too.  The only way I can read your PM's is to go into your account, change your password (I can't see your passwords either), log in as you and read your messages.  Doing that would be pretty obvious, since you'd no longer be able to log in and you'd have to contact a Mod to change it back for you.  :D

So there you go- my personal guarantee that your messages are indeed private.

I do feel like I'm being 'judged' as well ! I started this thread , but I didn't say any thing I wouldn't have said infront of my mother !! and I'm not sure that our American members would have even recognised the word I used as a 'swear word' is there a list of prohibited words somewhere ? and how do I get that list ?

As it's a family forum the filter is automatic on everything.

There is a list, but not viewable by non-admins. I'd PM it to you but all you'll see is a whole lotta smurf.

I generally type "smurf" when I know it'll get picked up by the filter anyway, but I use the full fat versions all the time in real life  :D

I also NEVER say "SAK" in the real world either ... it's either "knife", "Swiss Army knife", Swissy", or the actual model of the knife. I know a few of the guys here DO say the acronym in real life ... and it confuses me everytime  ::)

Maybe the Americans wouldn't, but we have a lot of UK based influence, and they have added some words- things like the double S version of peeing, the main ingredient in salsmurfer and a box with a couple of L's inside.

:D

Oh, we had a field day when Grant announced that smurf filter! Trust me, we had like 8 pages in mere minutes iirc. Think Grant had to :twak: a few times before we settled down.

Would be interesting if there was a different filter for the country you was in, but that would cause too much overload on the server probably. Am supposing certain other words that were offensive in your posted country would get filtered for your area, but seen as whatever in the others. Nah, stupid idea.  :twak:
