General thoughts on the Hybrid?
on: March 27, 2008, 07:27:11 PM
I have just found out that the wife has ordered me a Hybrid as it was my birthday the other day and the original present she had ordered for me had fallen through.

As I know nothing about this tool and really had no interest in pruners until Bob did his thread on the Genus, what are the general thoughts on it?
I'm back!!

Yeah she's not bad.  :)  Apparently she had originally ordered me a SAK with a USB but for some reason she had to cancel.  I can't say I am disappointed with that as I am not too keen on tools with electronics.

I had never really looked into one until now.  It looks quite handy actually.  She only ordered it because it was yellow.  ::)  :D

I like the Hybrid.  With the exception of one implement (the long bud cutter doodad) just about all of it's functions would work well in a survival or bushcrafting situation.  In addition, none of the implements lock, so you will have no worries about the law.  One word of warning though- just about anything that goes into those jaws will get cut, so be careful of fingers, electrical cords, headphones etc.

And don't let the wife catch you in the larder with the nanny if the Hybrid is around!

The sheath isn't great for EDC- it's a purpose or job oriented tool designed for easy access.  The top is open and the Hybrid is easily accessed but also fairly easy to fall out.  It's meant for florists to use at work so it's easy to fire in and out of the sheath.  It stores in the open position and doesn't fit the sheath when the tool is closed, so if you want to carry it elsewhere (and it seems to me this would be a nice option) you will need to buy a seperate sheath.  As to what will fit it, well your guess is as good as mine.

Does the tool lock in the closed position ( yes I know I should read the review, but I'm tired and lazy :D) ???

Nope.  The only lock on the Hybrid locks the shears closed for safety.

Hi,

I really like all three of the L'Man pruners.  The Hybrid was my first purchase.  The early one I got had loctite failure problems resulting in blade locking.  Leatherman fixed mine and changed from loctited pinion to a lock-nut design.

I took my Vista (with lock-nut) to Maine last fall.  Was far better than the Gerber that I used the year before on deer stands.

Like Bob, I ordered the Genus.  With the snow and all, no cheer here.  However, this is a class machine.

Any of the three are top-notch for me.  The Genius is a bit more money, but I love mine.

Joe

Yep, the Hybrid is a good'un.  :)

The knife blade thingy could have been a bit longer for sure, but that's my only suggestion for improvement.

In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools
