Rewaxing a jacket - advice needed please.
on: February 06, 2013, 11:06:08 AM
Hi all,

I found a bargain Marks and Spencers Waxed Jacket in a charity shop which fits me perfectly and only cost £8.00.

I'm really pleased with it and would like to rewax it as I think it needs doing.

I've never owned a wax jacket beofre so I wondered if anyone has any tips or experience they can share.........

Cheers  :salute:

You can get Barbour Wax which is easy to apply ... just follow the intructions on the tin  :tu:

I have a Belstaff jacket and pants, I beleive I used the wax that Belstaff made, not sure if they make it anymore.Try British Motorcycle Gear or Belstaff directly. Barbour is good from what i hear.

It's pretty easy actually.

It's best to apply outside on a sunny day.  Warm the tin of wax so it is almost liquid.  Quickly brush it on, getting it roughly smooth but don't obsess on evenness.  Give it a day or so before assessing the color smoothness. You can adjust a bit with more warmed wax and a hairdryer to  smooth things.

Start from top (shoulders) and work down the coat.

Trad beat me to it.  :salute:

Excellent advice as usual - thanks everyone.

I've noticed a few very small holes where the cotton has broken. Can these be patched somehow? They're not big enough to sew (or even patch) and there are only 2 on the whole jacket as far as I can see.

I'll wait for a warm day to arrive before I start  :D

If there too small for even a single stitch, I probably wouldn't bother - just let the wax take care of it  ;)

Yes - they're tiny - I'll take your advice and leave it to the wax.

Is the Barbour wax superior to other waxes or is there much difference in the brands?

I live in Gloucester and there are a few shops selling Barbours so I may be able to get some in town.

Cheers again

You don't have to wait for a warm day, just do it in a warm room ;)
Barbour wax is only about £7 and one tin will do the coat, use clean cotton cloths to apply the wax (old cotton t shirts are good for this) and rub it in well.

A friend recently sent me some homemade waterproofing formula in an Altoids tin, that he made following a YouTube video.  I haven't used it yet, but since it'll keep for a while I can still decide what I want to eventually use it on...  He'd also sent me a jacket waxing video, by the previously mentioned Barbour.  8)

I love this site! Advice coming in from all over the Globe.

Cheers everyone!

Dr Gonzo - Thanks - I live in a flat (apartment block(?)) so indoors is better for me as I have no garden! Also £7.00 is good value for such a nice coat. I'll get Barbour then.

Stormdrane, I'll check that youtube vid out as I'm a DIY fan. I think I'll use shop bought wax to start with so I can perfect my technique and then see about making some DIY stuff up.

Thanks all  :salute: :salute: :salute: :salute: :salute: :salute:

Maybe do it in the kitchen with the heating on and the stove on also that should be warm enough, you need to keep the wax in a pan of hot water so its liquid.
The wax has gone up a little since I last bought some, still under a tenner delivered though ;)

A tenner is still good value to prolong the life of the coat - Id never be able to afford to replace it!

I use a hair drier to met the wax. A sponge to apply and the hair drier to ensure it is worked in well.
