Simple lanyard is best
on: February 09, 2013, 12:42:26 AM

So maybe others have already figured this out, but, what the heck...

I've tried a bunch of different paracord lanyards for my SAKS, but wanted more functionality than just a way to fish the knife from my pocket.  I decided to simply thread a piece large enough to fit on my hand and tie a simple knot.  So, not only can I fish the knife from my pocket, I'm also protecting it from dropping, and can easily let it fall if I need to use my fingers on the task...a simple turn of the hand puts the knife back in my palm.

Add a tiny s-biner and you can clip it to a belt loop, belt or your pocket.

don't know if I'm s-boner deficient, but I always manage to get the things hung up on my belt loops and tear them to shreds.

Ignore my previous post, wrong thread.
Now my elastic lanyard has S-biners on both ends for maximum flexibility. I love the ease I have removing and reinstalling the lanyard and I can hang my SAK from my belt loop (black S-biner) or my Victorinox bel clip (shiny S-biner).
I tried many configurations and I had a bigger carabiner on the free end some months now, but this tiny clip is the best! Got another 5 for my other SAKs.

Made my first lanyard (with knots) today, then had this idea of running a red cord through the middle. Got to use the package hook.  :D

Next time might try putting a knot up top to hide the red cord tail.

Found some cheap paracord at Home Depot. Should have known better. Sheep in wolves clothing, not the real stuff, multi-stranded stuff inside. But... only as a decoration had removed the junk from inside and used the shell. Tied that fake cord around the split-ring with a slip knot. Used the Climber's hook to fish the rest through the center. Think it looks better with orange.

Nice knot. Any link with instructions?

There are several videos and places which illustrate how to make this knot, known variously as a Lanyard Knot, Diamond Knot, Friendship Knot. The easiest and clearest instructions that I have found, and how I learned it best were done by Tobias here:
Homemade Gifts Made Easy, Lanyard Knot Tutorial a.k.a. Friendship or Diamond Knot

If you are using standard parachute cord you might want to use about 20 inches. If you are going to want a loop big enough to fit you hand through, you will probably need another couple inches. If you are using tether cord or similarly thin cord 18 inches should be about right, again increasing this length,  if you want a bigger loop.

all of my frequently used tools have a lanyard or has an attachment point for a lanyard. it makes for an easy retrieval or extra safety net when you're the type who's got slippery fingers.  ::)

Decided to try something a tad more than just a simple dangle. Slip knot, braided, and two friendship knots. Gives something to grab onto, is long enough to be useful and noticed if laying in a clutter, and just right in the pocket.

Some day may learn to make a better lanyard, but this was rather easy - minus the occasional slip-ups of the lanyard knot. Probably would work better with three colors of cord.
