Toothpick, tweezer and pen.... (a poll and a mod)
on: February 11, 2013, 09:24:11 PM
Yes I have a mod to show, but I also wanted to add a poll here.  Lets say you only get to have 2 scale tools, which two do you want most?   My pick is tweezers and pen, and I was assuming most would feel the same, but I dont want to assume, so I am curious...

Anyway onto the mod!

So I've really been liking the little 84mm cellidors lately, so they've been getting some mod work done on them so they can meet their full potential!

So... we have the standard toothpick and tweezers...

Tweezers on the front...

And on the back the tooth... ... oh snap that's a pen!

What devilry is this!

Well I started with the pen and toothpick and was trying to figure out how to combine them.

I cut the nub off the toothpick and then ripped the existing nub off the pen.

I drilled a 1/16 inch hole in the nub.

And then just a tiny dab of hot glue in the nub and the pen was held in quite securely.  The toothpick slot has to be enlarged as well, since the pen is thicker than the toothpick.  I used a 3/32 drill bit and drilled it out.  I clamped the scale against some steel and drilled it that way.  A round file would probably work too.

And there we have it.  Now I can add a pen to my golfer and make it the best 84mm compact possible since I have zero need for a toothpick.

:D

It sort of depends on the model.  If I have pliers, I don't need the tweezers.  BUT in all other situations I prefer the tweezers and pen over the toothpick.

Honestly I never use the SAK pen. I always have a full sized pen on me and writing with that small thing is just soo..., well you know. ;)  I prefer the standard T&T.

EDIT:

BTW, you can use the regular multipen refills too, much cheaper. :D  Here's a size comparison of the Compact pen, a multipen refill and a manager pen.

I always carry a bullet space pen so I prefer the tweezers and toothpick.

i'd vote 1) tweezers (must have !)
            2) tooth pick (cos i do use it, probably souldn't with my teeth )

although the pen is a really useful back-up i've only ever used mine 2 or 3 times as opposed to the countless times i've needed tweezers or pick

I voted for pen + tweezers mainly because I never use the toothpick, although I always have a pen (Parker Jotter) and my EDC knife has pliers. The toothpick is pretty much useless to me though; unless the thing were brand new, I'd never stick one of those in my mouth.

(Image removed from quote.)

I find I use the pen a few times a week, and the toothpick zero times in the last 40 yrs. :D

Good tip on the pen refills though.  I have piles of Vic pens though from buying compacts as donors.

The pen was the one thing missing from the 84 cellidors for me, so now that I figured out its no big deal to add it, and I can have pen/tweezers Im pretty stoked to build my ideal mini EDC 84.  I think it will be an 84mm super tinker with pen and tweezers.

Sorcery I say... 200 years ago you would be burned at the stake for such a thing.

I expected to see it being a Manager length pen rather than the Compact pen. (More Sorcery!!)

That's really cool.

As far as the poll, I voted Tweezers and Pen because like others have said (here and other threads) I just don't want to stick that pick thing in my mouth, especially seeing that many of my SAKs are 2nd hand.  :dwts:

One pick mod I have done is cut the end off and stick a needle in the nub. Much harder steel than normal straight pins.

Toothpick can be whittled out of a stick, or use a zip tie (which I have done). Them Swiss tweezers got grip. Pen > toothpick. And, barring having a colorful mouth if it leaks, the pen could be used as a toothpick.  :P

Am assuming you won't be forgetting the pin too.

Make that 10 for tweezers and pen, and 1 for toothpick and pen...dumb phone  but yes, though i have a hard time writing with the pen,  actually used the one from my  swisschamp last night, as normally i have a Fisher bullet as well, but i realized i had one in my sak, and i was at a restaurant trying to diagram something. Still haven't figured out a great way to hold the pen though, as i have large hands

Try screwing the end nub into the corkscrew, or putting it under the hook and use the whole SAK as a pen.  Works well on a compact or Yeoman, but then again it would probably be a bit clumsy on a Swiss Champ.

Much appreciated! However, my swisschamp has no hook, and at this stage in its life, no corkscrew...

 that one made me laugh. I promise i didn't! I got it on evilbay, just over $20 shipped, not bad for a broken corkscrew and a stained main blade. I only wish the cutout scale wasn't loose

Would like to see an Alox with tweezers & pen channels inside the scales.

I picked up some wenger tweezers to put on alox back scales.  They are much thinner head than Vic ones, so it seemed like it would be less intrusive to use those.

Fitting the pen in alox scales will be tougher since alox scales are structural, so an additional liner would be needed under the scale.

Now, what about regular alox scales, and a thicker liner that held the scale tools in the middle or other position in the SAK.

I'm surprised so many people have opted for no toothpick so far. Not enough meat eaters on this forum obviously  :D

007, if you want my opinion don't mess with the 93 alox scales.
I find the pen, toothpick and tweezers more a gimmick then good useable items.
Just doesn't feel right to put them on a die hard 93.
I would opt for fully loaded snap-on alox scales on the cellidor models.
