Why do you like black-finished tools?
on: March 30, 2008, 10:06:39 PM
Just saw a BO SuperTool at my local SportsAuthority... I've never got into BO tools, but was still tempted, as I'm sure everyone here understands. ::) :D Anyway, it got me thinking about why people might like the black finish, so I made a poll to find out!

For me, they just look cool.  8) Also, generally speaking, BO tools are rarer (probably not every tool though) so I like the fact that they are harder to get.

I can see them as serving a purpose, ie for the military where shine is a big no no, and on some tools they do serve the added benifit of rust resistance :)

But I think most people by them for the cool factor :D

Me, I prefere them shiney :)
Give in, buy several Farmer's!!!!!!

I prefer some tools to be shiney and some to be BO.  I would love a BO Swisstool  for example, but I prefer it in SS.  The Supertool on the other hand I much prefer in BO.  I also think Gerber's look great in BO.

While I do think they look cool I do have a small reason for wanting a BO tool, I do a bit of tech/stage work every so often and having a tool that i can use on stage or similar without the reflections is a big plus.

The rust protection is also a big bonus but my vote goes to looks!

I rarely if ever carry a BO tool.  They look real bad real fast and I think it's just a little depressing, especially when you often pay extra for the BO that scratches and wears off so quickly.  A tool is meant to be used, and unless I need something in a subdued finish (which I rarely do these days since I'm retired from the ninja business) there's really no point to it.  They do indeed look cooler- I won't argue that one bit, but that's not worth the extra cost, and those looks fade too fast.

When I was in the military BO was OK in combat, but now that I'm retired,I prefer shiny, easier to care for,and when out camping, shiny can be used for a signal mirror.

It's not that I dislike it but most of the time it costs more money and since I don't need a black multi-tool it's just a waste of money. Of course if I was in the military in a front line unit, or used the multi-tool when hunting then it might be worth it but for doing honey-do's around the house I'd rather have the extra 10 bucks to buy beer.

I like black oxide..........but I don't like scratched black oxide.

Looking forward to getting me a Skeletool CX. It has the black DLC (diamond like coating) that doesn't scratch.  :)

One of the things I like about BO and I haven't seen it mentioned is they seem less conspicuous when clipped to my pocket.

Maybe that is because I wear black pants and carry a BO Charge Ti. Perhaps if I wore stainless steel or aluminum pants a stainless steel clip would blend in better.  :D

I don't see any pockets, but it looks like a can opener might be in order. I guess even the tinman could put a good multitool to use.

I do not think that people here don't like BO,I feel, and I may be wrong that most here are practical individuals for the most part.Heck, that is thge reason we carry Multi-Tools.If BO was practical, say for a Military,LE,Hunting application for the User of the BO tool that individual would go with the BO.If I was still in the service I would go with a BO tool if it was available and said tool had the apropriate tool mix.
