Johnny I have a Surge & do not have a problem with a rattle , but it is a big/heavy tool & if you have small or average hands might not be the best choice. I like a tool with at least 1 or 2 blades , a file (Leatherman diamond file is a must)& scissors . Make a list of what you think your Dad would like & have a look at thishttp://www.leatherman.com/products/tools/default.asp Having only a week would probably rule out a Internet purchase . But if you are in the US I would think you might be able to get a Wave for a bit under $70 ( ebay definitely under $70) .Good luck mate.
Welcome to the forum Johnny_blaze It is so nice of you buying your dad a multitool as a gift, I think it one of the best gift a man could ever have. I have a SURGE and I EDC it all the time, yes mine rattle a bit but it does not bother me and it doesn't seem to effect the function of the tool. The pliers are very comfortable to use but the other tools that are used when closed pinch a wee bit when used hard. All in all I'm very satisfied with the SURGE. If its not for your dad try looking at the Leatherman core or the swisstool, I own a swisstool it a very good tool but it doen't have one hand opening blade that way I don't edc it much.
Mate the Core would be a good one if ya Da does not need scissors or the Surge . If you are worried about the Surge's reputation go for a swisstool they are really solid/well made if you can pick up one for your price range . Just make sure it is a Swisstool & not a Spirit(a lot smaller multitool) , a lot of sellers list the spirit as Swisstool. The only thing I do not like about Swisstools is getting the tools out can bend your fingernails, but the do have a lifetime warranty (Leatherman has 25yrs ) & they would be one of the best for build quality. Good luck mate.
For construction work? Look no further than the Core. It has the BEST screwdrivers too.. So, I'd go for the Core!
I've never used either extensively, but if I were in your shoes I would certainly pick up a Core, or maybe a Sog Powerlock. Not to be contrary, but if I was looking for something that would work as close to dedicated construction tools as possible, the Swisstools wouldn't be my first choice. That said, from all I've heard they really are quite nice, so don't let me stop you if that's what you want to do.
