Lanyard suggestions for a Blackout EvoGrip 63 SAK?
on: February 20, 2013, 08:48:00 AM
  Yesterday was notified that I had won a Wenger Blackout EvoGrip™ 63 Swiss Army Knife. What type of lanyard would you suggest for such a knife, since it obviously likes to hide in shadows that could be a theme.

  Then would have to find a crafter as I still haven't mastered the simple Friendship knot. All I can do is three-strand braid which suits me fine for my Climber.

  Since the Blackout EvoGrip™ 63 SAK  is a special knife having the Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) finish, figured would be worth investing in a decent lanyard too. Not sure there are many kangaroo braid braiders here, as those do look great as Akubra hatbands.
  Paracord should be okay & more affordable, although am not really into skulls or other creepy stuff. Guess there are no glow in the dark strands in paracord? Know there are some reflective flek, which might be okay if needing to find the knife.

  Sort of wonder if there's a black colored mini-driver? The toothpick and tweezers look blackened, but no corkscrew driver??

  Suggestions are open as to what you would recommend, long as it's not skullaciously creepy.  :D

So many styles and types to pick from.

Maybe something wide and flat?

or longer but thin?

I'd say something simple, mainly black, and a bit of red in it, to match the shield. Something like this: (stole it of google, don't know how to make it ;) )

Sorry to go off topic but what is the name of the lanyard on the red alox? I'd really like to try it out.

The above is made from ABOK 595 and ABOK1120.

If you don't have the Ashley Book Of Knots those numbers won't mean much to you.

If I get some time I'll knock up a small batch just as in the photo and put them up for sale.

ABOK1120 is a poachers knot with an extra wrap (scaffold);

ABOK595 is a turks head - the link is for a 2 bight - anyone know how to do a single bight?;

  Luckily seen a link of the PDF download of the manual, huge too. Rather have the book, over 600 pages!
  How on Earth can one remember that many knots, or know which one fits their purpose. EDC the book?

  Ashamed about how bad I am, and my cat runs for cover when grabbing the paracord. My attempts end up in a glob of WTF knots.  :ahhh

There is glow in the dark paracord. Also, there's a gitd tracer paracord that comes in many colors. Tie It All Together has some great tutorials on YouTube as does our own Stormdrane. Very informative stuff that may help you do this yourself, if your up to a small challenge :think:

Still won't be as good as the book.

Out of respect for Mr Ashley who spent 11 years of his life writing it, I would ask that that link be removed from public view please.

  Wonder where I can get a lanyard (or two) made similar to this. If I only had the patience to make one myself... am still having fun with the friendship knot. Does not have to be exactly like this, but in the round knot with a loop on one end & snap clip on the other. This one is far more accurate to what I have been looking for, 'cept the fancy knots long the way can be omitted.

  Would like to get one for both this Blackout EvoGrip 63 & another for my Climber.

Well, that lanyard is made by the extremely talented Mr Stormdrane and he doesn't sell them!

He provides "how to's" for most things so you could make it yourself ;)

  Not sure what it is, I get lost in which step am on and end up with WTF knots. Guess I can try, have well over fifty feet of black paracord here.

  Looks like some folks use a twist-on needle for para-cording? Never seen one of them rascals before. The knot looks easy, bust easy is not always as it seems. Think after a few tries now I figured out why the Friendship knot wasn't working. Had to spread & twist a leading line after the first step - but that in turn causes the link to twist and oh so annoying to undo. (see attached photo, see that left twist?)

  Wonder if women make for better lanyard makers as they have more finger dexterity & patience than us guys do?

I bought the ebook Paracord Fusion Ties for my iOS devices and have used that for many of my paracord needs. The paracord ball knot is one I've been using on my lanyards as it's independent of the lanyard and slides. This way you can put the lanyard on your wrist and slide the ball knot to tighten the lanyard on your wrist.

Here's an image (not the greatest but you get the idea I hope)
