Anti-spam recommendation
on: February 23, 2013, 07:54:32 AM
I was thinking of the problem we've been having with spam lately. Why don't we have a requirement on profiles that has restrictions on making new thread topics? Let's say, you can only make a new thread after you have 5 postings on the forum? I wouldn't think the number would have to be too high but it may prevent spammers from getting in and making new threads immediately. Thoughts?

In theory it should, however new members are supposed to be restricted from posting links as well and yet the spammers have somehow gotten around that.

Its worth looking into though.

Flip side to the coin, at least the Spammers are keeping themselves separate with the new threads rather than spoiling the flow of a running thread ... for the most part anyway. Would stopping them create new threads lead to spam being in a "worse" place?

I think in theory it's easy enough to implement a no new threads for new members, but remember most new people do their first post/thread in the New Member Forum...

That's why I suggest that the post number would be low enough to where a real new member would be able to do that after making a few posts

As a new member that started off with a new thread, I think it's a good thing to allow us newbies to start threads.

My new thread had good reason to be a new thread too :)
