skeletool CX scam?
on: February 26, 2013, 05:45:03 AM
I ordered a Skeletool cx from Amazon. It was sold to me as "new". This is how it arrived:

Is it possible that the 154cm blade is simply not marked or is someone trying to sell me a cx with a 420hc blade?

Could be possible the CM154 marking never got applied. Wished was a easy way to check the hardness of steel.

Can sort of tell the hardness of the steel when sharpening with a Spyderco TASM. That comes with years of use though. Physical looks don't think you can tell the differences.

The 420 blades are stamped and the 154cm ones are laser cut. The edges of the blade should have sharper corners on a 154 than on the 420.

Also, there are no known PE 420 Skele blades, only came in CE. The 154 was the only one that was available in either the CE or PE.

I all likely hood, the laser etching was missed on this one.

When skeletool first came out 420HC is PE whereas 154cm is CE. That was a few years back though so someone having a new 420HC PE to swap onto this one is pretty unlikely.

Just a guess, but it looks like it was ground down from a ce. The ce blade on my skele and freestyle both have, for lack of  better term, a mini choil between the first hole and the thumb hole. This one does not, as theblade appears to have less belly, hence my hypothesis. Thoughts?

The CE on those are pretty deep, so if you ground them off you wouldn't have much of a blade left.

Take a look at the edges of holes on blade, as metro said you should be able to tell the difference between a punched hole and laser cut hole. The former has inward rounded edge on front but sharp edge on the back, whereas lasered are 90° sharp on both sides.

Upon closer inspection it would appear this is laser cut not stamped.
