Leatherman Warranty
on: February 26, 2013, 08:41:55 PM
I sent my Leatherman Surge to Whitby & Co last week for repair last week. The serrated blade was seized along with the blade exchanger. It has been used for the past 5 years for at work, gardening, sailing, fishing, camping & DIY. Friends and family have borrowed it on many occasions.

I recieved a parcel in the post today with a brand new replacement! I was only expecting a repair. Hopefully it will serve me for another five years!  :tu:   :tu:

With the replacement Surge I recieved a leaflet 'General Repair Information'. Thought some of you might be interested. (Appolgies if this has already been posted)

Minimal Clean:-

- Thoroughly rinse the tool in hot water (using mild detergent, if necessary).
- Dry the tool
- Using a lubricant such as DW-40, CRC, 3-in-One or vegetable oil, re-oil the pivot areas of the tool.

Heavy-duty Cleanup:-

- Use a cleaning solvent , such as paint thinner or turpentine, to remove gummy or oil-based substances. Do not use chlorine-based solutions.
- Use cottom swabs or a fine-bristled brush (such as those found in gun-cleaning kits), to get into some of the tighter areas.

RUST:-

All of the components in every tool are made from 430 series stainless steel. While this is the hardest stainless available, "Stainless" does not mean rustproof. The term "corrosion-resistant" better describes the steels capabilities.

Repair:-

For light rust spots on smooth surfaces, rub the area with steel wool. For areas of heavier (penetrating) rust, the components must be replaced.

I'm glad they set you up with a new tool.   No problems with my REBAR so far, but it's nice to know I'm backed up with such an excellent warranty  :D

Oh so its 430 they use!  No wonder it rusts so easily. 430 is only chosen for formability, so bending the frame I suppose is why.  It's more prone to rust than 420 or 440.

Calling it the "hardest stainless available" seems really disingenuous. I love the Leatherman company .... but come on. This verbiage is stretching the truth. Leatherman sells premium tools with CPM 154 and S30V steels, claiming (accurately) that those premium steels are harder. So why try to fool anybody that 430 is the "hardest stainless available"? I know Leatherman isn't saying "hardest stainless made" or "hardest stainless money can buy" but a novice certainly wouldn't catch that distinction.
