Have been many professional craftsmen use various forms of strip lamination for making boomerangs. Why not a SAK scale? Have had strip laminates last over 30 years now.

Al Gerhard was the best in the hardwood laminate business. Was another British outfit that did ash laminate that lasted me years, yet not impervious to German Shepard teeth - our family dog liked to catch them too.

Wenger had replaced my EvoWood S557, so it's a new wooden SAK.   :D

Yeah, we is butt men after all.  :D

Would like to see them jaws too if you can get a shot of them laying sideways with the jaws open. Wonder if Wenger & Victorinox pliers have changed much throughout the years? Also curious as to the the difference between the two company pliers are - past the slip joint.

WOW!! Beautiful... your custom Awl/Reamer looks like it was inspired by the Wenger tool design.  Nice idea; this is a really great SAK.     :salute:

I said in another thread I didn't care if Vic dumped all Wenger 65mm models... but I think I should retract that... they should keep the Pocket Tool Chest.

Anyone have one of these 2009 VSAKCS wood Compact models? I never did like the way it turned out. The letters almost seem embossed to me. More photos on the link.

@ Sidhartha & Marius: Thank you for your positive feedback!

@ Marius: The red liners are made of vulcanized fiber. This fiber is a fibrous paper impregnated with an epoxy material so the fiber becomes very durable.

Droolin' so hard over many of these!

Quick question for the modders/craftsmen - If one does not care about retaining the toothpick/tweezers/pen, can wood scales be thinner than the standard plastic ones by a millimeter or two on each side?

I am curious as to whether or not it is possible to make a wood scaled Compact as thin as, say, a Alox Pioneer...

Thanks!

Various wood types may have a stronger cell structure than other wood types, whereas Walnut or Desert Ironwood would be stronger than an Oak or fruit trees.

Have made wood scales by hand that had the channels for tweezers, toothpick, pen, & pin. However once material is removed for the channels the structural integrity is compromised in those areas. If a sharp blow was to hit the area for a pen, or the knife were to drop, more than likely is would fracture or break if the scale was thin.

See a lot of the wooden scale makers prefer to not go through the trouble of cutting the channels. They also pin/peen there scales on. Victorinox and Wenger did not even put tweezer and toothpick channels on their wooden scales, probably due to no fast consistent way to do so.

Peening/pinning is an ideal method to hold scales on as there would not be glue, moisture, and longevity issues. But there is a feller here in MTO that had sent me a set of scales that was routed on the outer edges and laser cut underneath. That worked out great for the toothpick and tweezers. Pin could have been added, but it would have to be a tight fit.
Then also have to contend with oil or varnish protectant & finishing build-up - as compared to plastic or other materials that do not require preserving the wood.

The pen channel would be the hardest to accommodate as that scale alone needs to be thicker, as there is no other way to strengthen the wood for a 2mm wide pen. Taking the wood down to 1mm would make the wood fragile on that one area, leaving a 3mm wide scale overall.

The least successful scale with a pen channel was 4mm thick overall. Had a 3mm and it fractured during the finishing stages. Had also tried running a pen down the middle with disastrous results. I was not a happy person that night, but 4mm by hand is the bare minimum in my opinion. If the wood was stronger, and the channeling done slowly by machine or laser, maybe 3mm - but that's not much organic material there and a crack is likely to occur over time.

I EDC an Australian Silky Oak scaled Climber, but the scales are thicker and rounder. Sets well in my pocket. Have a part of Australia in my pocket.  :D

I agree with the 4mm. This is 3.7mm.
