what is the best real cheap tool?
on: April 05, 2008, 04:41:54 PM
what is the best tool for under 20 dollars? I am talking no name brands. what do you think. I had an old shaffiled that was identical to the supertool. the implements were sharp and there were no washers on the handle plier conection. I lost it and the replacement tool sheffield now makes is no where near as nice.

Yep, assuming you live in the US you could also scrape up a few more bucks and get a new Leatherman Kick at Wal-Mart.

Save up a little more and spend the extra to get a quality name brand, you will never go wrong. Look for sales, or good used ones if you need to save a few bucks. "Real cheap" usually means you get what you pay for, not always, but generally speaking. With "real cheap" you run the risk of hurting yourself using it, poor or non-existent warranty, poor construction, the list goes on.

Just my very humble opinion,

Check Lowes for their Kobalt brand multi, which I'm fairly sure is still less than 20 bucks.

Old school design, but looks to be very rugged with decent fit and finish for the price.

I've seen a favorable review of it on MTO.  Comes with a decent warranty so if you do damage it you should be able to exchange for a new one back at Lowes.

I've been intending to pick one up for a while now, but always forget.

They do turn up cheaper on there. But to be honest the best advice is to look for a used Leatherman on USA Ebay.  You should see a few for well under $20.

the cheapest I got was a Winchester kit. one full size MT, a small MT with a full nail clipper on the outside,
a cadet like knife and a money clip with knife all for 10 usd. We've used it a lot, and had it more than 2 years.

I wouldn't say I trust it for bigger jobs, and it has some sharp edges here and there (not on the knife!) and compared
to any name brand it's dingy, but I wanted too see what a cheaper tool was like but not spend a lot to find out!

I'd get it again.

I agree with other guys look for a used LM. But I also second ringzeros comments about the the Lowes multitool. It's not that bad for the $.

thanks guys, I do have a few leaterman tools and was looking more for some no name brands to learn about them. I looked at the kobalt tool and I think it is identical to the husky tool at home depot and the sheffield tool. a good tool, yes.

I used the hysky tool today to cut a screw, jewelry, and later take a broken toy apart. it is a very useful tool and the knife and pliers are better on this tool than they were on my gerber radius.

so do you guys like the new version more? that plastic in the pic almost looks like a washer but mine looks like it is part of the handle and not a washer. I will look closer and post a pic.
