Preparations for a Multitool Test!
on: April 06, 2008, 12:21:40 PM
Alright, I'm planning on testing a couple of tools, head to head to see how they will take some outdoor exposer.
I'm planning on using my Vic BO Spirit (or should I use my Swisstool RS?) and my Leatherman Blast to see how they take some, "outside time" :D

My first thought is leaving them on some kind of neutral surface, in the rain for 12 hours and see how they hold up.
Good chance for rain tomorrow night here and the temps will be in the 30s (Fahrenheit).

Any suggestions or thoughts? I'm thinking of using a glass plate to hold some water (rainwater) so no chemicals/agents are added to the test
(like stuff in treated woods or in the soil and other things that could change things).

I'll take pictures before, during and after and we'll see what happens. It's time I find out for myself, in an actual test
to see if they can take it (ohh stop squirming).

I would like to start between 6pm-9pm my time (Pacific time). Some others have said they will do some tests too but I'll let them
tell their tales.
All suggestions and thoughts would be appreciated. :salute:

Do you have a Gerber or a SOG? Would be good to see the other companies represented! But your test seems well thought out :)

I think I'm going to open em all up (the tools), give em a good chance to "Breath Deep the Gathering Gloom!"
and I understand my conditions may vary/be different from others, because of so many variables,
it's more for fun and curiosity (like driving slow when passing a car wreak!) but I gotta know!

I don't understand how rust works. Seems like its not the water itself that makes stuff rust, its the water drying off. Like if I get my shotgun wet, as long as I bring it inside and wipe off the water, its fine. But if I let the water evaporate off on its own there are little speckles of rust. And also rust rings around the edges of wherever each little droplet of water last was.
In order to be certain of having the right tool for every job.........one must first acquire a lot of tools

IMO you should use tools that are of the same finish. That way, you are creating a fair test between both of the manufacturers.

Looking forward to seeing your results.  :)

According to Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rust
both air and water are necessary for appreciable rusting to occur.

Absent the water iron oxidizes very slowly, if at all.

Absent the oxygen - iron immersed in pure water - same slow oxidation.

Salt in the water will also greatly increase the rate of rusting.

I would be interested to see how BO compares to a SS using the same model of tool though.

Okay, I'll use my Swisstool, and I'll have the glass plate upside down for simple drainage.
Here it rains a spell, then stops, then rains again, over and over again. not like the
drenching/long rains of the midwest. Good idea's guys.
