So what type of steel person are you, for my part I used to be a real steel whore, and would happily spend a fortune just to have the latest tacticle steel offering ::)

Nowa days I prefere simple workmanlike steel's such as carbon 1095 or 440c, something I can sharpen really easily and won't chip in hard use :)

What about you guys ???

I would love to join in this one, but having never experienced a real top steel (yet  :D) I can't comment.

If someone would like to send me some quality steel I would not stop them.  :P
I'm back!!

Supersteel! :D I don't know why people say it's hard to sharpen. If you are stuck in forest with only river rock avaliable yeah, but given the wide avalibility and low price of ceramic/diamond sharpeners they are just as easy to sharpen as any other, heck even regular stone/sandpaper works well on them as long as you don't plan to reprofile with them.

I've seen chipping of S30V on both mine and my buddy's knives. Different companies and neither of us get stupid with our stuff since we're both broke. That's got me put off of S30V right now. Steels like 1095 and Aus8 are good enough for EDC and take an edge nicely.

I'm still old school:

     D2 for normal cutting.

     440C for cooking,and around water.

1095 for chopping, and just being tough.

I don't have a favorite- all I know is, I won't spend extra money on a blade whose only benefit is a fancy steel.

never said they were difficult to sharpen, it's there propencity for chiping rather than rolling that concerns me :-\

I used to look down my nose at the 440 series steels :-[, I just thought they were old and low tech, and used by companies who were too cheap to use 'proper' steel ::), I've fortunatly changed my mind since then :)

My favorite is INFI, I only have one blade with it but I like it's toughness and corrosion resistance and edge holding, quite expensive.
Next and the most I have is SR-77 a variant of S-7 a shock/jack hammer steel, not as expensive and very tough.
Next would be 5160, really tough and not expensive thought it does spot a little.
I'm very impressed with VG10 on my F1, holds an edge very long.

I have a Spydie with VG-10 steel and I love it. If I could get a SAK with it I'd be all over that.

I'm happy with either, though the super-super-steels like s30v and zdp-189 kinda scare me a bit (not that I'll never by one  ::) ). VG10 and 154cm/ats34 are cool with me, but so are well done 420 series steels. Obviously there are good and bad about any single steel. If I had to pick just one to use all the time, it would probably be something simple that's easy to sharpen, though it's fun to have the fancier options too.
