IT HAS HAPPENED: The SwissTool Spirit is now EDC
on: March 20, 2013, 02:54:21 PM
...only it's not MY EDC.  :D

My wife has nearly worn out her Leatherman Juice S2.  While we were discussing it, she mentioned she wished she had a saw with her tool.  And that better pliers would be good too.

I thought about it, and decided to pull out the Spirit I bought on sale at Amazon and see if she liked it.

Now the BossLady has strong attachments to her tools and she's not ready to say anything bad about the Juice but...

She's been very happy with the change and I forsee this tool getting a vigorous work out over the next few years.

My wife avoids petrochemicals as best she can.  She says that's my job.

I think if she doesn't mind the added weight, she'll be quite happy with the Spirit. The Spirit is 3 whole ounces heavier, which is a considerable difference, but you get a lot more tool options, and locking tools.

I'll be interested to know how she likes it.

I'm currently carrying a Juice CS4 in my purse, and have considered swapping it out for my Spirit X, but just can't bring myself to suck up the added weight, considering how infrequently I need anything more than even Squirt/Dime size tools.

The CS4 isn't much lighter than the Spirit and the tools are less "useful" (flat drivers, Phillips).  Plus, the corkscrew is just not of use to her.

With the better pliers and saw, she's thrilled.

So far.  ;)

Ya the spirit is a tad heavier, but I dont think noticeably so.  It's a heck of a lot nicer too, so those 50 grams are worth it!

Spirit 210 g
CS4 156 g

The weight difference is about the weight of a keychain sized tool. I wouldn't argue the 'nicer' point.

There's just no way getting around it, belt carry is the way to go. In a good sheath you do not feel it.
At work I carry a second compact sheath with bits and pieces (otherside) rather then cramp everything in one.

She's obviously a woman of quality, breeding and extremely good taste, both in husbands and tools :salute:

Yes and no.

If you're working around tractors (getting on and off), around horses, or tight quarters, sheathed tools can be a problem--mostly due to snagging.

My preference is a GOOD pocket clip.

A good clip for my Road Tour is what I would like too!

I work in construction and restoration, often a toolbox is not direct at hand. Up and down stairs, basements, rooftops, tight spaces, in and out the truck, you get it. I couldn't do without good working cloths (Fristads), especialy trousers to carry my implements in a handy way.

You are right a bulky heavy loaded sheath isn't nice at all, that's why I love the Spirit, it rides very comfortable and compact in a snug quality sheath. Easy to reach, no snagging etc. I like to keep my (hand) pockets empty as possible. Stuff tends to fall out..

My wife is the same way ;)  She has a Classic in her purse, but she never really uses it.  Sometimes I remind her when it would come in handy for her on occasion.  I'll learn her yet :P
