Serrated blades
on: April 10, 2008, 01:40:48 PM
HI,

I recently bought my first mutlitool (LM TTi) and wondered what the serrated blade is used to cut? Are there materials that this type of blade can cut better than a straight?

Thanks

Typically, a serrated blade is designed to cut fibrous materials better than a plain edge.  Seatbelts, cordage, canvas, etc. are generally cut more easily with a serrated blade.  The greater surface area of the serrations gives them a cutting advantage, and helps the blade hold an edge longer.  The downside is they can be a pain in the butt to sharpen.

a sharp Plain Edge blade will cut cordage/fibrous materials about as good, problem is many don't keep their PEs sharp enough for that.

for fibrous materials (rope and such) an "average sharpened" Serrated edge works better than the "average sharpened" PE (like how it is when new), and a serrated edge lasts longer (holds it's edge) over PE. one reason I think it is because people generally only use serrations for a limited amount of applications.

the problem is a knife is generally used for many things, other than to just cut rope/fibrous materials and serrations don't work as well for other things, it will shred and rip more, not as good for delicate or simple tasks.

like stated, sharpening serrated edges is not easy for most, especially in the field.

I'm with you mate, use the serrated blade for all the gnarly stuff, and keep the straight edge for more precise cut's :)

but maybe "Jack the Ripper" and Yachtsmen and "Tactical knife people (Sport-Utility-Knives or SUKs) may prefer the look of serrations!

Well, I like serrated blades for some things. One example is my wife's plastic hand lotion bottles. Ok, ok, stop snickering you guys. She uses Gold Bond, again .... enough with the snickering. Anyhow, once she can't pump out anymore hand lotion ..... STOP LAUGHING! I have to cut the darned bottle in half so she can get the rest out.

I'm never sharing again. ;)

Greg hit this one right on the nose! A straight edge knife will cut the same material but it will get dull. But, serrated edges will cut and stay sharp due to the scalloped serrations!

A friend of mine who's an electrician was talking about the "plastic knife" on his multitool, and I had to check it out: turns out it was the serrated blade, which he always thought was meant to cut plastic. He does have a point there!

This is an 8 year old thread but as the op, I finally had a use for the serrated blade for the first time!
I needed to cut a 2x2 into equal sections.
I had a cordless circular saw at home but the battery was with the cordless drill that I left at a show I was setting up.
So got the corded jigsaw but there was no blade.
Found some hacksaw blades but the hacksaw was at the show as well.
Now this was late evening and I needed the sections for the show tomorrow.
I remembered about the serrated blade on my LM.
So started on the 2x2 and it took a bit of adjusting to as never used this blade before.
My sister thought I was joking using the LM. She said it was like using a knife to cut down a tree.
Well persistance and an aching arm paid off!

Thank you Leatherman for an excellent Multitool and saving the day.

Nice story, though technically it looks like you used a saw, rather than a serrated blade per second

It sounds like you were having the same kind of day I had a few weeks ago, only mine was with a staple gun, not a saw!

I use serrated blades for things like palm fronds and rope.  I've never found a plain edge blade that works as well for these sorts of cuts.

A serrated blade works better than a straight blade for me when cutting thin plastic, e.g., the plastic harness that holds individual soda bottles together in a sixpack.
