Schrade Tough Chip vs. LM Micra?
on: April 11, 2008, 04:19:57 AM
Just wondering having bought the Schrade Tough Chip at Big Lots for 3 usd was pleasantely suprised at how well it works.  I am wondering if anyone else has this tool and a LM Micra as to give me a comparison. If the micra is alot better tool I may be getting one (because I really like the scissor better than I thought I would) but if only marginally better or equal will what on micra purchase.  Thanks for any input you have.

Writing just about the scissors:  If size is no object, keep the Tough Chip.  The Micra's main advantage is its small size makes an easy fit in a small pocket.  Keep in mind that Micra has no locks.

The Tough Chip scissors are larger and seem stronger, but the handles don't close compactly.

I don't use the other implements on my Tough Chip and Micra and can't address their fitness.

I like both tools' scissors more than the scissors on my other multitools.

I love the Tough Chip. IMHO it blows away the Micra's scissors.

I'm not sure about the tough chip having better scissors. They are bigger, but my brother damaged the edge of the scissors on his tough chip when cutting a clampack package. I've never had a micra do that.

If the edge of the scissor was damaged cutting plastics, then I presume it is made of low quality material. I have used the scissors of my Squirt S4 twice to cut clampacks but there was no sign of wear and tear on the scissors.

Like edap said, they must have soft steel. I've used mine for years and haven't had a problem. Maybe Schrade started using cheaper steel or something.

We cannot expect a good quality keyholder tool with the price of  7 USD. Both my P4 and S4 cost 4 times that much each but I am very much satisfied with the quality and precession workmanship. Before I got into multitools I didn't know that such things that are made with great precission and fine workmanship existed. Thats the main reason I got hooked with MTs.

Scissors that get damaged cutting plastics must be made of ordinary SS such as SS-304 and SS-316. These two SS alloys have high very corosion resistance but soft. I was a process engineer before in a big plant and we use SS-304 and SS-316 tubes in evaporators and heat exchangers and SS plates as lining of vessels that contain corosive and abrasive materials.

No the small one cost 3 dollars  :D may or may not have been a mistake. I did by the way cut the plastic clamshell the Tough Chip came in all to piece with it just to see if it would damage it.  It didn't hurt it at all. Then I took and cut through all 119 pages of my new Cabelas catalog that was just lying around. Seem pretty tough to me. I don't plan on using it that hard normally anyway. :D

Our local Big Lots sells them for $7 US and they are made in China.  My earlier comments apply to the USA-made Tough Chip and I have no experience with the Chinese-made version.

Well, I just got back from Big Lots and for 7 bucks I have to say the Chinese made Schrade was well worth the money. The blades all open on the outside, and are of decent quality. Also, the sheath is very cool. It has the pouch where the tool goes, and it has another pouch in the back for a bit kit. On the tool there is a square implement, then there is a hex adapter that fits on adequately. I would have to say that I recommend buying this tool! Not for EDC but in the tackle box or even the glove compartment. Also, the wirecutters work extremely well for 7 bucks.. I would prefer this than the Gerber Suspension any day of the week!

Well that was the last Schrade I did buy by the way ::)

I found the err of my ways and got a Micra :D

There is no comparison really between the 2

1 is a good quality MT with a tank like feeling and the other is well not :D

if you have to guess which is which then you don't have a Micra 8) :D

I still can't complain about the 3 bucks I spent on the Tough Chip though

Owe plus I took the Schrage name off the sheath that it came in and my  :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh !!!MINI!!! :ahhh :ahhh :ahhh fits in there perfect so that alone was worth the 3 dollars :o :D

"Tank like feeling"?  I always thought the Micra felt a little flimsy actually.  I haven't had any problems with it though saying that.

I was just generally speaking about the Micra.

I would like to say though that although if feels flimsy (IMO) it certainly is strong.

I've noticed the earlier USA Leathermans feel flimsy compared to the newer ones.
