Some of my collection.......
on: March 29, 2013, 06:15:08 AM
Thought I'd post up a few pictures of my combo tools.I also have quite a few vintage changeable blade knives.Anyway here a some for your viewing pleasure.
First up are several plier knives mostly made in France.
Next is a curious tool kit consisting of an adjustable wrench with one end that accepts various types of blades.First one I've seen like this.Japanese made maybe in the 1960's.
Next is an Oscar Barnett plier knife from the early 1900's.
Last is an old Valley Forge Cutlery radio knife with(unfortunately)a broken master blade.
Hope you enjoy these as much as I do.

Very nice collection. :tu:

The second one is from the '60s, but this is the first I see that is made in Japan. There are lots of them made in US(Imperial), Germany, Hungary, ...

Oop, sorry I missed this thread earlier Ray! :-[ A very nice collection of old multitools you have there sir! :tu:

Those top three plier-tools I believe were all made in Germany. I've seen them with a number of different stampings on the knife blade (Coles, Hoffritz, Bauermann, Voss, Klein, etc) but I believe they all originated in Solingen. Quality made tools for sure. :)

And that bottom plier tool? Definitely made in France, but that is the first one I've seen stamped L'electric that had a triangle-shaped awl. :o Most have a screw-type awl, like this one:

I've always loved the idea of blade exchangers, but always wondered how useful they are in the real world ?

Fine collection there though mate :)

I have to say I dig the Japanese adjustable wrench tool! I have been looking for a multi-tool with a wrench on it for some time. That one is neat to say the least!

Thanks to all for the kind words. If these next pictures are too off topic please delete them.As I can only post 4 pictures at a time I will have to make 4 posts. These are tool sets that use a knife handle as the main piece and other blades are inserted as needed.
Some of the inexpensive ones were made in the USA in the 1940's and 1950's but the most elaborate ones are usually of German origin. The exceptions were the Napanoch and New York Knife Co sets;neither of which I(unfortunately)possess. Most of these are shown without the pouches they are normally housed;a lot of the time because they are in such sad shape.

Wow, you do have quite a collection of different kits there Ray! Very impressive! :tu:

Seems like the "tang" of the blades are generally either "hook" style, or "rounded with two notches" style. An exception would be the ones produced by Aerial (Marinette, Wis) which have a post-and-notch style tang:
