on: March 29, 2013, 07:48:14 PM
I'm a huge fan of other peoples paracord weaving skills, but I'd be interested in peoples ideas beyond lanyards and bracelets ect ???

Weave some around your cars steering wheel, carry handle, up the banister of your stairs or on a cane or walking staff :).
If I remember correctly, wait, what was I saying?

ah I forgot a good one - belt, make a belt. Not to hard, but you will need a few hours for the first one. Really worth the effort, very comfortable to wear.

I quite fancy making a belt too actually.... rather than a double cobra sort of thing, I was toying with the idea of a double wide trilobite type thing. This is a single:

Got tons of cord and also got bored of the basic stuff like bracelets!

There's also the Slatt's rescue style which is a pretty useful bit of kit Mike:

Oh I just found this too - make the buckle out of a mini Altoids tin, then you have a survival kit on it! :D

Net tie down, cargo netting, rifle sling, hat bands, anklets, chokers (not seen any yet not ringmail), paracorded bikiki, gauntlet wrist/forearm protector, gators, body net suit - why not? Be different I say! A loose fitting large-hole body net to cover yourself in - might make a fashion statement and be the next hit!

  Curtain overlay, be colorful!

Paracord seat covers! Okay, having a knotty butt may not be such a good idea...

Belt sounds terrific! Muscle band for media players? Bike bag/clutches. That triangular space in the frame a bicycle, you could make a fashion statement with a loose (large hole) weave to take up that space, also allow use to carry other items without having need to strap onto the tubes. I could got for one on an 18" Rockhopper, maybe have large catch pocket on the bottom to hold stuff there, place to strap a pump into, ect.

A good weaver can do almost anything.  :D

How to make a paracord belt by Essexman.

I've made a couple of these now and thought I'd share some photos and details.

I used two guides when making them:

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-make-a-rugged-and-handy-Paracord-Belt/

You will need ;
- nice belt buckle
- paracord
- something to cut the cord with
- something to melt/burn the cord with
- something to measure the cord and your waist
- lots of time
- a cuppa tea

When you first get your cord you will need to pre shrink it. I put mine in the sink for approx 20 mins with warm to hot water. Then take it out and let it dry.

For this belt I ended up using 40 foot of Orange and 50 foot of Tan for a 52 inch waist belt.

This is how I start the belt.

The outer orange and tan cords are my working ends, the inside orange pair are the core cords.

For the details of weaving the cobra stitch watch the youtube link above.

After a while it become second nature and you just have to keep going, checking that you don't make any mistakes along the way.

and some more

When you get near your waist length you need to think about the end. I went approx 5 inches past the waist length and then started the end work.

Now take the two outer working cords and make a a cobra weave

I have the advantage of having a paracord needle for the next part, but you can do the same with other tools.

Now feed the cord back under the weave. MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON THE BACK OF THE BELT!

and after some time you sould have something like this

Cut the cords and burn/melt flatten the ends. Yes it looks a mess, but no one will see that side (if you did it right!)

you see..otherside

This is how to make the loop to keep the tail in place

and then weave the cobra stitch again

How it should look in the end

I my have missed some points, feel free to ask questions.

He makes it look easy. Wonder how many (hundreds) feet of paracord would be needed for a 52" waist?
Notice he doesn't show how to splice in more cord if needed. then skinny butted people, I tell ya!

I tend to stick with simpler knot work, but some folks are certainly into more labor intensive paracord projects:

I've done a quick Google and the thinner 3mm stuff seems to be most common. 'Proper' paracord is apparently 4mm so do you use 3mm or 4mm?

The dog leads and the belt are awesome by the way  :salute:.
- Or was I too preoccupied with other thoughts, like: if toast always lands jam side down, and a cat always lands on its feet, what happens when you strap a piece of toast, jam side up, to the back of a cat?
