Can-opener-as-phillips fail
on: December 09, 2013, 11:56:14 PM
Ah, man...

The cold water handle on my bathroom sink was a little loose, so I go get my Climber, and flick out the Can Opener to tighten the screw.

And it's just a HAIR too far recessed in the hole. The blade of the can opener wouldn't let it fit.

I had to go get my Micra.

Ah, well. I guess that's why I have 7 MTs sitting on my coffee table.

That's a relief. I thought you broke a can opener.  :ahhh

I love the Inline Phillips, but a back Phillips is better than no phillips
If I can help, let me know

Yeah, it is great to have choices!  Love the inline philips too! :D  Explorer's rock :tu:

I just started to carry a Climber this week but I do have a Rambler on my keys.  The Rambler has a great philips too!

I tried ... and succeeded... in removing a phillips from a door hinge with the Rambler phillips. Shockingly good for its size.

I've never bought into the can opener as a philips driver theory- not deep enough to really engage.

And I keep a SAK, flashlight, and an offset screwdriver in the medicine cabinet. The duct tape is for bandaging, I swearing.  :-[

Always go with the best available tool for the job.

Fixed for you  :pok:   ;)

Which is why an MT can sometimes be the "best" tool (because the other "better" tool is too far away/the operator is too lazy to go and get it).

I've had a 'not great' experience with an Explorer in the past. Kind of colored my perception of the tool.

Here's the beginning of that conversation.
http://forum.multitool.org/swiss-forum/explorer-minus-hook/msg594601/#msg594601

The tool was repaired and worked fine after, but it still left me cold on the Explorer design. I know, illogical, but that's reality.

Also, I have a Micra, and it did the job fine.

Sorry to see that you had issues with an Explorer!  I have seen and owned many that look like the same philips head as yours but never had any issue using it.  Maybe I just got lucky!

I also never had any issue with the philips on the Rambler!  I think it is the best one I have used!

I like the Explorer as I like the mag glass, which I use to look at dates on old coins, find the gold stamps on rings and jewelry.  It also works well to remove splinters! LOL

I hope you give another one a try again.  The latest ones have a glass mag inside the plastic holder that you can pop out to clean/replace.  The new Swisschamps also have this newer type mag glass.
