Geeks, Freaks, and You
on: April 13, 2008, 01:52:28 AM
So I just bought the complete DVD series (1 season!) of the show Freaks & Geeks, from circa 1999. (Great show by the way, youtube has some good clips. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_kMkBcoxTxo&feature=related)

Anyway, it got me wondering what group you all were a part of back in the awkward (for me at least) days of high shool... So put in your vote, and tell us what those years were like for you.

I'd say that I was definetely in the "geek" category. Not that I wanted to be, but I guess someones got to do it, right? :P ::)

I was a geeky jock! I got very good grades and I excelled in all the sports I played ( football, wrestling, and baseball).. I was always an A student...

I certainly fell into the rule-breaking freak category. Always in trouble or causing trouble, that was me. :(

But it wasn't my fault you see.....I blame it entirely on the hoodlum friends I hung out with :D

When I asked my wife whether she thought I was a geek or a freak, she answered simply, "Yes."    :P

I went with other.  I mainly hung out with the freaks and geeks, but none of the jocks or "cool people" picked on me like they did with most of the others.  I made it a point to not be too geeky or otherwise "weird", and I was good at sports so that helped.

Other people included me in the "redneck" social circle. Of course most of the football team were corn-fed country boys so for the most part our "clique" was the biggest baddest people in the school. Although to our credit none of my friends or I were bullies of any kind. Nor were we "exclusive" either, if you liked beer, and didn't mind listening to our Hank Jr we'd party with ya.

I was a rabid Devo fan and a Dungeons and Dragons player.

If that doesn't say it all I don't know what "Geek" is. I don't know a better girl repellent than that combination.

That's actually a good pic of me- I'll post my old driver's license pic again sometime and you'll see what I mean.  Then there was the black leather jacket, ripped jeans, Iron Maiden T shirts, earrings.... you get the idea.

Since we're showing old pics. Here's me in my former life. Redneck guy who liked beer and guns. This is probably about 3 or 4 years out of high school. Maybe 5. For those interested, I THINK that's a Mossberg shotgun but I could be wrong. The gun in my other hand is my old faithful Taurus model 82 38special revolver. How redneck is my family you ask? The revolver was a present from my Grandmother for graduating high school.
