Loose tools on a new Rebar!
on: April 16, 2013, 12:15:08 AM
I just picked up a brand new Leatherman Rebar from Target and all of the tools on one side of it are very loose. You can pull out the main blade or the file, and the tools in between them just rattle and come out!! I have never had this happen before! It looks like all that is needed to fix it, is to tighten the bolts that are on either side of the tool hinge. They are not torx, but just flathead "bolts" with small spikes around it. Apparently there is a special tool that is needed to tighten them. Is my guess correct, or is there an easy way to adjust it? I will just exchange it at Target if there is no easy way of doing this, but wanted to ask here first!

Your best bet is to exchange it at the store.  This is not acceptable for a REBAR.  All of my tools are set nice and firmly in mine.

That is what I thought! It is a shame that they just do not make these things with a torx screw, or something that can easily be adjusted. Fixing this would take 30 seconds! It looks like all you would need is a special kind of nut driver for it.

I thought it was a perfectly good quality tool myself, and it sounds like you have one that needs sending back :tu:

If this tool has the same knurled bolt construction as the one shown on the Leatherman website, then you just grab that knurled bolt on each side of the tool with pliers, and tighten or loosen as needed. The initial movement of the bolt may be difficult due to loctite on the bolt. Otherwise, it's really just that simple.

I actually tried that, but the bolt is sitting where you can only get pliers on half of it, making it real difficult to get a grip on. The metal from the body of the tool rises up above the  bolt on the other half, making a good grip with pliers almost impossible.

The only complaints I've heard about the REBAR are how some of the tools are either too lose or too tight - an easy fix or repair.  I've personally waited years for LM to come out with a tool like the REBAR and it's one of my favorite multitools  :D

Dunno, actually; my father ran across it while on his way to a job.  Picked up the Wingmen that I think I have in my thread for more than the Rebars from the same guy. XD

My Rebar had no quality issues, I just didn't like it. It wasn't just the lack of scissors either. The blades were much thinner than I expected and didn't fill me with confidence - they just feel like a cost saving exercise, and that plier head irritated me too. I know there's a lot of excitement on here about those replaceable cutters, but I'm far more likely to need the larger gripping area which is impeded by those cutters. I can see why some folks would like it, but it had no place in my line up.

Isn't it funny how we like different things (and a good job too ) , I like the thinner blades , I used the plain edge to chop up an onion yesterday with no complaints. As for the plier head I think it's Leathermans best one so far in that size tool but I do see your point about the smaller gripping area  :-\  Time will tell if that's going to be an issue for me.

Yup, fully agree  :tu: Several of the tools I've taken a shine too aren't that popular around here compared to others, whilst several of the popular ones don't work for me at all

I also had the loose tools problem on a new Rebar!  This, along with the fact that my new ST300 didn't have the wire stripper on the can opener, means that I've had to spend extra on postage to get a quality tool. I haven't bought a new leatherman tool since. The guarantee is good, but not if you have to use it on the last two tools you bought from new, due to manufacturing faults!!!! Save your money people, if you want a Leatherman tool, buy a used older pre bead blasting model, I guarantee you won't be disappointed. The Rebar is an ok tool, but it doesn't compare to the older models in terms of materials and finish.

Everyone is giving me hell about saying the rebar isn't good. All I'm saying is there is a reason it 36. I got a rebar and it broke after two weeks, 1 n done is what I always say. Now with my charge Tti I do way harder stuff and no problems. Also there is no diamond file. Being a Kershaw man I need a diamond file
