New Victorinox Cheese Knife
on: April 18, 2013, 04:10:03 AM
Anyone else just have to have a new SAK despite it being a bit pricey?
I was ordering anyway from Amazon and saw the Cheese SAK at fifty bucks, I'm sure if I was patient a better deal would come up - but I really wanted that SAK!

http://www.victorinox.com/ch/product/Swiss-Army-Knives/Category/Pocket-knives-with-lock-blade/Pocket-knives-with-lock-blade-111-mm/Swiss-Cheese-Knife/0.8833.W

It hasn't arrived yet, but tracking says it is in the country and I'll have it within 24 hours at the latest.
I can't wait!

When you watch the Vic documentary, you do notice how the Vic bloke is very enamored with cutting cheese...

Playing around with this knife I think it makes a pretty nice food prep SAK.
The cheese knife is a very sharp plain edge blade that could be used for cutting many types of food and the other blade is a locking serrated blade that could also be used on many foods.
The 2 decent sized blades must have many potential uses and you even get a fork on the end of the cheese knife which could be used for more than just cheese.

I have one of these in the post from Felinevet. I have been living in largely cheese free Asia for 4 years, and am heading home to New Zealand for a month soon.

A cheese knife, a serrated bread blade and a corkscrew combine to form a serious declaration of intent as to my holiday activities.

We think of knives as outdoor tools, but something like the cheese knife would pay for itself when travelling through Europe. Cafes on the tourist trail in the Eurozone can get expensive, and having the tool to prepare lunch from a supermarket or boulangerie makes travel significantly cheaper.

With my Cheese Knife I wouldn't mind a variant that adds the bottle opener and the can opener, therefore offering a really great food prep tool - useful in the kitchen or camp kitchen or picnic or whatever.
I'm pretty sure it could be customised with the tools from the Trekker, but if Victorinox offered that variant then I'd buy one.

Of course I often have more than 1 Victorinox SAK or multi so I've got those features well covered, but having just the right tool all in one device is very appealing.

You mean something like this?

That's pretty close to what I was thinking of.
Maybe a little less rare and hard to find would be nice though.

I wonder what came first, the horn handled cheese knife or the promotional plastic handled version with the inset Swiss flag?

Hopefully this wooden handled version is a limited edition before a mainstream line of picnic knives.

If it never eventuates, you could always stick to Belgian beer, as it often comes with a champagne style cork.

Oh, that awl has a sewing eye? Is it a 91mm awl put into a 111mm frame or a real 111mm awl? (The 111mm awl is a little bit thicker, and I got one without sewing eye)

I've got Victorinox cheese knife and noticed the main blade is little playing when it's locked.
Is it normal for that kind of locking mechanizm?
Thank you.

I'd guess that this is normal, presuming that you are talking about a very small amount of play that has no effect whatsoever on the blades use - that is what mine has anyway.

The Bubina Kasemesser w/liner lock has the 111mm slider-lock awl w/sewing eye.

Looks like it has the entire original 111mm openers layer without the locking caplifter.  They must be using the linerlock variant we saw on the latest OHO Sentinels I think it was.  Makes sense for this knife.

I just opened mine up and the opener-layer is the old style.  Very interesting knife; a real mixture of the 111mm lines.
