Got email today and won a $300 voucher from Driza-Bone of Australia. This means I can finally get an Aussie drover jacket!

That's the good news. Now the sizing on the other hand gets a bit weird. Being a big feller doesn't help either, so I gotta loose the belly even more now.

Have a 54" to 56" chest, in between there. 3XL shirts are comfortable. Most 3XL jackets are comfortable, 4XL seems too roomy. Belly (computer muscle) is 58" to 60", breaching the 150 cm range.

Looking at Driza-Bone's Sizing site I'm pushing the 6XL size?!?!?? Is that correct?!?!
What is the rest of the jacket going to be like, tent city?!?!  :ahhh  Shocked at the size difference.

  Fearing to order a 6XL, cause ... OMG ... I'm not quite a US 4XL yet!  :ahhh

Received a reply Driza-Bone, with the above information:

Quote from: Drizabone Sales
Thanks for your email – I was just in the middle of writing back to you on Facebook. Based on your measurements, the 6XL sounds like the right option. Our coats are designed to be a bit roomy, so you can layer up underneath if need be (or even put the Wool Liner inside when it gets cold). We’ve never had any issues with our size guide, so you should be pretty safe.

If you find that the sizing isn’t quite right, we are more than happy to offer an exchange, however you would be responsible for all associated freight costs and as you pointed out, this could be a bit of a costly exercise! Unfortunately we don’t have any stockists in Idaho; our online retailer in the U.S, David Morgan, does have a store near Seattle if you happen to be venturing up that way (I know it’s not close, but relatively close considering the size of the U.S!)

Gone ahead an ordered a 6XL, for $67 shipping & taxes. Where's the faint emoticon?

Still... $67 for a $250 jacket is a good trade. I did drop a hint about the red sand, but they probably didn't take me serious.

Which will arrive first, my replacement Wenger EvoWood S557 or the new Driza-Bone Drover Coat?  :D
Both are scheduled to ship out tomorrow.

They are great coats. I pair mine with one of their fold up hats which lives in the pocket until it rains.  This then puts a lid on my walk in tent.

Am really concerned about the size differences. friend over there in Australia, though we have never met past facebook says he wears a 3XL Aussie jacket, and a 4XL US jacket fits him.

Most everything I have looked at, a 56 inch chest is a 6XL in Driza-Bone, but that's between a 3XL to 4XL here in the USA. Driza-Bone says they make their coats roomier, so am hoping I didn't order a tent. $67 shipping is a lot for me, but it should last be some years. Just hoping me and it fit:D

Mate, $67 for a Driza-Bone is a steal!  These things are made to last for many years with a little care and attention.  Yes, they are also supposed to be worn with a little wiggle room for extra layers so don't worry if it doesn't fix you like a second skin.

Personally I wear mine with my Tilley hat when the weather turns nasty. :)

PS, a waxed flat cap is a good alternative to the Tilley.

Was rather shocked. UPS delivered the 6XL riding coat today from Driza-Bone. Have not opened it yet, apprehensive yet excited.

  Coat labels

Let's see, the coat arrived in this... UPS & TOLL shipper bags.   :D

  Open that up to find...

  Which had...  :D

6XL AU is about a 4XL US Regular. Will have to extend the leg straps. So need to pick up some snaps and find some material to make an extension.

Fit looks right to me. :tu:  I wouldn't worry to much about the leg straps, I only ever wore them when riding anyway.

Anyone know what size the snaps are? Sent an email to Driza-Bone, even asked on their facebook page. No reply. Even asked if I could purchase a 5 or 6 pairs to add snaps to the two outer pockets & a knife sheath.

Say... is there a snap photo collection post anywhere? Know some folks collect bottle caps and other strange things. Some even have made sheaths and put some rather exotic snaps on. Have admired a few here at MTO, just wondered if there was a central repository to show off those fancy snaps?

Am enjoying my Driza-Bone. Wore it out today but for some reason my camera was confused by the bright overcast weather. The photos came out strangely. Supposed to be cooler tomorrow, so hoping for a better photos.
Too bad the mountains are such a long drive, but would be nice to clear my head up there in the pines.  :wc:

Was out at a local wildlife preserve today, never knew it existed before. Seen a few ducks and geese, along with other birds and heard/seen a few woodpeckers too. Could of taken a long nap out there. Least there were a few pine trees there. Would be a neat place to camp out, maybe even take the telescope.

175th anniversary Driza-Bone Short Coat - Limited Edition
Reply #18 on: May 07, 2013, 05:56:27 AM
For those not aware, there are a few retailers (stockists) in Australia that have a limited edition & number of David Jones 175th anniversary Driza-Bone Short Coat.

The special Short Coat is made from mid-weight Oilskin, which is lighter than the Original Oilskin, yet retains the traditional Oilskin construction crucial to long-lasting wear. It is double-stitched in areas of greatest stress and allows enough space across shoulders and torso for ease of movement. Driza-Bone uses heavy-duty cotton on double-folded felled seams to ensure the hardest of wear and water resistance. The special Short Coat comes in black, to suit any occasion, for town and country use, weekday to weekend. It will be available for purchase in mid-April. So drop into David Jones to see Driza-Bone’s Short Coat and winter range, and be part of the celebration!

Now looking for a cold weather liner for this Driza-Bone Riding Coat. Driza-Bone's Wool Fleece Liner runs $99.95 + $58 shipping.

Found a site that has an acrylic fleece liner but would have to be altered, which runs $78 + shipping.

Searched online looking for a flight jacket liner in a Mens 3XL size, but no luck finding one. Anyone know of other liner options?

Never had a wool liner before, but the Driza-Bone version only covers the chest. Although a friend told me that wool still retains heat even when wet. But he was unsure if wool requires special care, or how bad it smells when wet.

Wood will retain some insulation properties when wet, more so than cotton but not as good as synthetic lofted insulation. I don't think it smells when wet, at least in my limited experience.

But for $160 I'd get a vest made with primaloft that's warmer and more versatile, unless you want that all OEM look.

Want to stay warm, and on the cheap - if at all possible. The OEM wool liner buttons inside the coat but only insulates the chest area.

A flight jacket liner is thin, quilted stitched, and does go into the sleeves. Have an XL liner, but it's rather small for my chest or I'd just use it. Would like to get the wool vest liner, but that's too much money for a liner.

Layer it up. I wear a long sleeved polypropylene top, polartec fleece jacket and then the oilskin.
Secondly, don't underestimate the benefit of chest insulation.
A vest under a jacket can keep you toasty while not restricting your arm movement or adding bulk.

Just what I was going to say.  No real benefit in having a liner over a good fleece jacket/vest.

Ordered a Cabela's (polar fleece 300) Snake River vest. $20 on sale. Maybe when I get rich will get the Drizzy-Bone wool vest.

Repairing a Pocket Rip
Reply #26 on: December 01, 2013, 10:49:08 PM
Ripped the pocket yesterday while ringing bells for The Salvation Army USA. The Driza-Bone coat is a bit tall and I was trying to lift up from the pockets & to lift up on my pants belt when I heard a rip. Coat is big around enough, just a bit tall too. Aussies don't have Big sizes without going Tall too...

Anyhow, how does one go about fixing this? Temporarily have Shoe Goo on the back side, and thinking of using some deer hide garment leather for a backing to stitch through using a sewing awl.

Should I also whip/wrap stitch using thing thread before or after the leather backing?

Am also wondering if I should rivet the pockets on this area to prevent future issues, or would that complicate things?

Driza-Bone Riding Coat: Repaired Pocket Stresss-Point
Reply #27 on: December 02, 2013, 04:50:02 AM
Added some Shoe Goo to the back side, which gives a rubbery surface to help hold the thread & material in place. After drying a few hours, stitched the tear using a simple whip using braided US government high-tensile flat twine. This should keep the tear more closed.

Finished with a freehand stitch using an Awl for All and 30+ year old buckskin for backing. Rubbed a mixture of Kiwi Mink oil on the back area & leather for added protection.

Thinking of stitching another leather backing to the other pocket too, for reinforcement. Another day perhaps. Hoping that Driza-Bone takes note of the area where the stitch tore through.
