It has happened. Say thank you very much and then give it to Oxfam, or use it as a beater somewhere... the garden etc.

I have many cheapies.... I always thank them and pretend it's something I have been after for a while.  They fall into one of two categories- either they know it's a cheapy and appreciate me being nice, or they don't know it's crap and feel good.  Either way, my day is ruined, why drag them down too?

Just thank them and act like it's the best tool you've ever seen. Later, if they see you and you're not carrying it tell them that you would hate to lose such an important gift. It's worked for me for years.

Thank them, put in your "stuff" drawer for a year or two, then either give it away or toss it. Maybe even keep it in the garage for a beater.

Don't give it to someone else as it might turn them off to using multitools.

I was given a rather pants SAK knockoff by my Nan a while back.  I was obviously very grateful and put it away with the idea of doing a comparison to a Vic SAK just to show why to buy the best.

To avoid awkward gifts I usually give them a list of items I want and let them pick one.

Anything would beat re-gifted underwear :-\ I've been the recipient of more than one crapola SAk Clone and/or tool.I just quietly, politely accept it,after all the giver was well intentioned.

If the gift is from someone who really doesn't know the difference between crap and quality, I generally just thank them and the item is bannished to the basement junk pile.  But if its from a close friend or family member I tell them "next time just give me the money instead, that way I can get something I like".  Yes, it's cruel but it works.
