Do you EDC the means of making a fire ?
on: April 13, 2009, 12:29:42 AM
??? is it really worth it if you live in a city ?  I used to carry a tiny ferro rod (about the thickness of a pencil lead) and a couple of pieces of that excellent Sparklite tinder, all wrapped in electrical tape. It was about the size of a small lozenge, but I don't even carry that now, couldn't ever imagine needing it.

My thoughts exactly.  In the UK, I can't think of any reason why you would need anything 'survival like' as if the worst happened and you were stuck somewhere, a simple phone call can get you a ride in no time.

I have a kit with extra stuff in but it's really not needed for EDC, more of a camping type thing... sadly!

I always have with me a bic lighter and a LMF mini. Phone signal is not so great here, and most of the time, i'm out of the city.

Oh, I have a small lighter - thought this was referring to all that tinder and spark making stuff (which I really like but am yet to need).

I could probably just rub my thighs together fast and start a goddamn fire  ;)

Sounds like a good idea to me but I don't think you'd fit in my pocket.  :)

I carry a small bic lighter, lighters are very usefull other than making something burn. I use mine sometimes to burn the plastic on electrical wire for easy stripping. Also use it to seal plastic bags just fold the end and seal.

Yes, especially by our cabin which is situated on the edge of a 2 million acre wilderness area.  Sometimes a Zippo, and always have a magnesium scrape type starter along.

I lighter is a very practical thing to edc, I just hate it when people assume that you are a smoker just because you carry a lighter  >:( By the way I am a smoker  :D

Lighter? yes.

Tinder? no.  If I need to start a fire in the city, I'll find something to burn; I'd probably look for a flammable liquid.

I carry a lighter for cigarettes, but not for "fire starting".

A small BIC lighter.  But in my rig I carry a blue flame buntane that way I can warm things up as semi's fly by at 70mph.

I use to carry my James Bond lazer watch but that proved too dangerous... :D

One BSA Hot Spark fire steel on my keychain and one in my wallet. Despite the small size ,they can deliver a very effective shower of sparks with a little practice.
