Looking for a commuter bag or similar
on: April 20, 2008, 05:06:26 PM
Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.  Did a quick look through and didn't know exactly where to start this thread.  Feel free to move it as necessary.

Anyway I ride a motorcycle 99% of the time if it's not snowing (well sticking to the ground) and recently needed to start carrying regular letter size documents with me along with all of my normal every day carry stuff.  Since I'm on a bike I need something pretty secure so that's why I'm thinking a commuter bag with waist strap.  But a nice backpack would also be useful.  So instead of blindly searching the internet I thought I'd ask you guys if you had any recommendations.  Right now I have a smaller bag I got at REI and it's served me well the last 5-6 years but it's just a bit too small to be carrying paperwork.  I'm looking for something high quality and durable and willing to spend a bit extra to get something that will last me over the years.

How about some Oxford motorcycle gear ??? http://www.oxprod.com/index.php?pg=3&action=dept&id=7&pid=0&p= , I was always a bit weary of carrying bags just incase of an accident, and them compounding the problem.

Thats said I crashed a couple of bikes wearing a Berghaus Munro daysack, and it's stood up brilliantly to the gravel rash :D

Looks like they only have one backpack.  Not really what I was looking for but would work I suppose.  Really what I want is an over the shoulder type bag with an additional waist strap to secure it but I'm having a heck of a time finding one.

They make very nice cases for electronics as well, really well made stuff at not too ridiculous prices.

Yeah it is much easier with a rucksack, other wise you just end up getting bashed around one side by a nice heavy bag!

Crumpler was recommended on a motorcycle forum so I'll take a closer look at them.  Backpacks don't work well for me since I wear full gear when I ride and trying to slip on/off a backpack is pretty dang hard.  A shoulder/commuter bag seems to slip over my gear easy enough.  I'm just wanting a waist strap in addition to the shoulder strap to secure it.  I've seen them before but now that I want to buy one it's a different story.  Guess I could mod a bag but I'd rather find one ready to go.  If anybody has any more links please post away.

Wenger makes some nice bags in the SwissGear line- the laptop bag I have is much tougher than I expected and was decently priced at Staples.

You could try something like this:
http://www.duluthpack.com/product_detail.aspx?product=Serengeti%20Deluxe%20Book%20Bag
or this:
http://www.duluthpack.com/product_detail.aspx?product=Book%20Bag-Standard

But they don't have waist straps. They are however bombproof and lifetime guaranteed, and almost everything they make is made in the US.
My friend rides a chopper with one of the first ones, slung over his shoulder and neck, and it never moves around.

I've got a couple of the SwissGear backpacks and they are definately tougher than you would think... The actual "Wenger" ones are pretty damn good too.
If you took all the intestines out of your body and stretched them end to end... you would die.

I suggest looking at Maxpedition. They have an amazing selection of military grade bags and add-on pouches. I have about 20 different Maxpedition products and most are multi-use and modular, mainly using molle straps. I can't recommend them enough. Almost all their stuff comes in khaki (my favorite), OD green, black and ACU.

Check out their website for everything they sell www.maxpedition.com, but I usually buy from www.lighthound.com. They have better prices and free shipping over $75.

I also ride 99.9% of the time, I havent even owned a car since i moved to the city nearly 10 years ago.

Anyway, if your adamant about a messenger bag you can't beat
Aerostich
Timbuk2
Chrome bags
Marsee

I personally own about 10 tankbags, all of which will carry letter and legal documents (except for the uber small ones) and all of them will convert to shoulder, backpack, messenger\sling carry

If I were you I would seriously consider something bike mounted VS on body carry, do you really want your EDC stuff (leatherman, gun, laptop) to break your fall?

PS Whatcha riding?

Check out aerostich.

The Norwegian camo pattern is the best looking one in the world. I think so anyway.
