What was your EDC before your first multitool?
on: April 21, 2008, 10:05:24 AM
I EDC this pair for more or less 10 years before I got my first plier based multitool in 1998.

A 4" Crescent adjustable wrench and a Wenger. This pair have been heavily used but they are still in perfect working condition.

Until now the Wenger still supplements my main EDC, which is a Charge TTI most of the time. The Crescent already retired but not disabled.

Before my disastrous relationship with a LM Super tool, I used to carry either my 108mm Mauser or my Swisschamp paired with either a Spydie or Coldsteel Folder :)

Middle one.

Which Wenger is that Eddie?  It looks like a Backpacker, but I can't tell for sure!

Before my pliers based tools I carried a micra and a Xikar gent's cigar multitool, and for a while I also carried a Wenger something or other with a longish blade, couple of screwdrivers, can and bottle openers and a corkscrew. Before the micra, it was just the Wenger (got it next door to the factory in Schweiziland) and before that just pocket lint and some change.

So that's why you Brits are so quirky! You must've had big pockets!

That was inappropriate...I'm going to chide myself.

mine was a simple red Vic Classic. It was given to me by a good family friend, then he passed (years ago) and his son (who was my best friend) lost his (confiscated at courthouse when he went for jury duty), so I gave him mine. Truth is I wasn't edcing it often but he was his.

I started carrying MT's in 1991 and prior to that I carried a Buck 112. Ever since then I've carried either a MT or a SAK(which I still consider multi-tools)

My very first "EDC" was a three blade stockman my dad got me when I was 8 years old (1968). They were on sale at "House of Values" what is now known as Fred Meyers. It was made in Japan and says "Sabre" on the carbon steel main blade, handle is made out some sort of jigged bone or antler. Once I kind of retired that one, I got another three blade stockman when I worked at Sears automotive in Bellingham Washington in 1982. Carried it for a very long time. I still have both of these knives, they are in excellent condition and I carry them on occasion.

But now I am addicted to knives and have more than I know what to do with and have in fact given away and sold many over the years. The ones I have given away were donated to Peter Berkenkamp for the military units he sends useful items to.

When I was 5 years old, my grandfather gave me an inexpensive Barlow knife which I carried for years.

When I was about 8 years old - while at the local hardware store - I persuaded my father to buy me a sort of cheap Hobo knife - unknown brand, made in Japan.  It had genuine plastic bone handles, a couple of clip point blades, fork, spoon, woodsaw, awl, can opener, bottle opener, etc.  Carried it constantly and even used it to eat meals on occasion.

Next was a genuine Camillus Boy Scout knife, which I EDCed for many years alternating between the Camillus BS knife and a Case Camper model, which was very similar.

I also often carried a Kamp King knife.  Kamp King made knives on the basic pattern of the Boy Scout knife, but they were so cheap that it didn't bother me to abuse them.  Mud, sand, and water encountered on caving and canoeing trips would eventually ruin a Kamp King, but then I'd just grab another for less than 2 bucks.

Eventually I discovered the Vic Tinker and have EDCed one for over 25 years now.

I actually carried my old boy scout knife from the age of 10 to about 28. then the PST came into existance and I retired the old boy. Ya know I now tell all my scouts about the multi tools and tell them that they are better suited for what they have to do. Ya know like repair tents, backpacks and generaly just getting things to work agin.

However I never felt ungunned with the old Cammilus.

I have to think way back on this one.

When I was 16 or 17 I had a CRKT KISS and a Ulster Scout knife I carried every day. It wasn't until I was 19 that I started EDCing a multi everyday. I think.
