Lately I have been really enjoying episodes of The Deadliest Warrior TV show which pits two soldiers that would have never met against each other to see who would win- pirates vs knights, samurai vs vikings and so on.  They take experts in the weapons and fighting arts of each warrior, test them for lethality, then punch it all into a computer simulator that runs a thousand battles and the warrior who wins the most is crowned The Deadliest Warrior.

Recently they did an episode that pit zombies vs vampires, so I thought it would be neat to see what the folks around me thought of this ultimate Sci Fi matchup. 

Captain Han Solo:


Or Captain James T. Kirk:


Personally I think Han Solo is the coolest.  When you compare them this is what you get...

First Officer: When put in a dangerous situation, Chewbacca roars and rips the offenders' arms out of their sockets.  Spock raises an eyebrow and says "Fascinating."

Romance:  Han got a princess.  Kirk got a green woman.

Ship:  The USS Enterprise breaks down a lot despite a huge government funded budget.  The Millenium Falcon breaks down a lot due to a lack of a huge budget.

Weapon:  Solo packs a Blastech DL-44 heavy blaster pistol that burns through stormtrooper armor.  Kirk uses a Federation issue phaser pistol that looks like an electric razor.

Clothes:  Style aside, no one ever managed to rip Han's shirt, while Kirk either shredded or fell out of his every week.

Friends: When Han's friend got his whole right hand chopped off he got a new one, got special training, then chopped the hand of the guy that took his.  One of Kirk's friends lost a finger and therefore always went out of his way to hide his right hand on camera.

Afterward:  When he no longer had a ship, Ford got a fedora and a bullwhip and chased magical artifacts around the world while Nazis chased him.  After Star Trek Shatner got a girdle and a police uniform and chased 80's bad guys around with Heather Locklear.



So there you have it- Han Solo is WAY cooler than Captain Kirk.  Feel free to make a case for The Shat, after all:

Don't think anyone ever accused Kirk of being a scruffy looking nerf herder... But overall I agree

I really enjoy The Deadliest Warrior show, very cool to see the analysis of the weapons and styles.  They do decent enactment of the fights too.  I haven't seen it in a while though, and wasn't even sure it was still going, but it's good to know it is. 

As for who is cooler, I would say you made a good case for Han Solo, but I find Shatner to be a funny guy.  However, Shatner is not in question, but the character of Kirk.  I know Han got a princess, but Kirk got who knows how many various alien chicks, so that could be cool in its own way.  Yeah, I'll go with Kirk, even though I like your breakdown of the various factors :D

Solo vs Kirk is easily a win for Solo

Friends: Vulcan traits compared with Jedi Knights abilities. Logic and mind melding compared with telekinesis and the ability to read minds and control minds without having to lay hands on. Even the dead ones lend a hand occasionally. Plus lightsabers are WAY cooler - I know, I have one  :P I'd rather have a mechanically minded Wookie than a 9 fingered slightly overweight Scottish dude (who isn't even Scottish) to back me up when things get messy too. If you look at the last film, Spock had to tell Scotty the formula that he had supposedly invented .... so he never even managed that  :-\ Scotty's reputation was caused by saying things were too tricky or he didn't have enough time so he looked good - Wookies don't care they just rip limbs off

Fighting style: When did you ever see Solo "set to stun"?  ::) He just blasts them. He defeats a rocket propelled bounty hunter whose dad had an entire intergalactic army modelled after him .... with a stick .... though he did have a bit of assistance from some spiky intestinal affair  :whistle: Plus he has no qualms about shooting first (until some interfering old git tries to fudge the issue to pretend he didn't)

Ship: The Enterprise is a big governmental ship. The Falcon outruns big governmental ships, then pretends to have disappeared by parking on one .... and they never notice

Not only does Solo win, he managed to achieve this reputation in only three movies, where it took Kirk a whole lot more movies plus TV series to be considered for the runner up position  ;)

I'm gonna go against the grain here and pick Kirk.  Did Han Solo ever do a flying drop kick, or that double fist beatdown?  Make his own gun to kill a lizard?  Yeah he got one princess, but I think Kirk has him beat on quantity.
