What was your first plier based EDC?
on: April 22, 2008, 02:18:43 AM
I started my plier based EDC when I got my LM Supertool with Mini Maglite sometime in 1998. But I did not let my previuos EDC (Wenger) retire as it supplemented my LM ST. I EDC this trio for about 10 years. The ST and the Maglite are already in their retirement home in my drawer but the Wenger is still in active duty with my Charge TTi.

My first was the PST I carried that thing for over 10 years and never seemed to need more. Unfortunatly it was left in a car getting the oil changed and it dissapeared.

But then the Wave came out and I never looked back. Recently I had been given a pst by the cranky ausssie and have grown to like it again. But I carry mostly now the Sidekick.

I also EDC a Kick but for a few months only. The reason why I no longer EDC it is because it has no scissors and my supplement Wenger Backpacker has also no scissors. So I EDC most of the time my TTI and sometimes the Wave.

Shortly after the invasion of England then! You got a long service out of it. Did it rust any in those 900 years? :pok:
Also, did it help during the Renaissance? I imagine Da Vinci would've loved such a thing....

Original LM PST, purchased within a year of when they first became available.  Used a lot over the years, but still in decent shape and still gets carried and used.

No model that LM has introduced since then is as good as the original Leatherman Tool, IMHO.

Most newer models are bulkier and heavier.  Those that aren't - such as Juice and Squirt - lack the strength and reliability of the original.

Got one the first year huh?  That must be quite the heirloom!

I came late to the game, getting a PST II around '96/97.  It was my second Leatherman.  At the time I was really only vaguely aware of their existence.  I bought a Micra at my local knife dealer's shop (www.srknives.com in Toronto) and ended up liking it so much I went back the next day and bought a PST II.  I gave the Micra to my girlfriend at the time, who decided it was a pathetic gesture because she assumed I got the small one free when I bought myself the "good" one.  Needless to say, we haven't been together in a very, very long time! :P  The PST II disappeared when my truck was stolen, along with a few other artifacts of my youth.  I've since replaced with with another PST II, and many other tools! :D

For me, it was the Sog Paratool. I got it after looking through a mate's copy of "Soldier of Fortune". Not much of it appealed to me, but I liked looking at the gear they used. There was a big ad for a paratool in there, and I thought it was the most awesome knife - a knife that was actually useful. I bought one a couple of weeks later. I used it for a fair while - until I saw a mate's PSTII....

About ten years ago, I was working as a Production Assistant for a short-lived animation company when we were setting up for a trade show and my boss asked me for a philips and I embarassingly had no tools on me.  That night, on my way home, I stopped at an OSH and picked up a Leatherman Wave(the original).  I carried and used it for most of my career as a P.A.  Right now, it's in my car for emergencies.

My first multi-tool was a Gerber. This was probably over 20 years ago.

The mecanics at work carried both Gerber and Leatherman. I remenber asking them which was best and they said they were about the same. I asked them which brand held up better and they said they lost them before they wore out. They lost them by leaving them on engines they were working on, but I never found one.

This Gerber and a Wenger Soldier have been in my grip for 20 years or more. They show signs of use but both are as serviceable as when they were new.

I thought I'd kill two questions with one pic. The climber pictured was my edc before I was given my old black pst in 92. I actually had a huntsman long before the climber, but the climber was the one I carried most.

I got my Dad a Gerber 800 Legend and he loves it. Whats not to like? Outside opening tools, one handed knife and scissors, replaceable tungsten carbide wire cutters, locking tools, spring loaded pliers, and even fiskar's scissors.

Yeah I agree. I still like the look of BO tools, but if you want tools to look good for years after, standard stainless is the way to go. I will say the tool looks bad, but still performs great.
