Alternative to a Utilikey?
on:
June 06, 2013, 10:25:04 PM
My boss has broken his Utilikey and I'm trying to find an alternative to suggest to him. Not because I think there's anything wrong with a Utilikey but I like to be a bit of a Devil's advocate. I've shown him my Squirt which he liked but it was too big, so I thought my Vic Manager might do but that's too big as well!
Before I accept defeat and concede that there's nothing better, can you think of anything else that might do?
Bottle opener, Phillips and flat screwdrivers and knife are the primary requirements but if there's something that's 90% of the way there then fire away. It has to be small, light and not poke a hole in his pocket.

I may get older but I refuse to grow up.

Well there's the Vic Rambler. Same as Manager but without the pen so it's a bit thinner.
Edit:
If he doesn't need scissors there's also the Rally.

Victorinox Rally? Its the same thickness as a Classic.
Fan of the Leatherman mini-bit driver and the Vic backspring philips.

A Rambler is the best replacement for a UtiliKey.

Agree on Alox Rambler, fits the bill, but just so much more expensive.

Yep an alox rambler makes sense. I never heard anyone think that a 58 on a keychain was big.

I have been looking at the IDL T10 and T7 for myself with the T10 for your boss being the better of the two. I also looked at the coast C3700 micro tool box.

I second the IDL choice. The T10's can be had, new, with free shipping, on ebay for as little as $5. The blades need sharpening properly before real use, but otherwise the value's there.
The T7 and T5 offer fewer tools, but they are much smaller and lighter weight than the T10.
I carry a T10, T7 or T5 in my bicycle tool kit. They are the smallest pliers I know of that will reliably cut 2mm stainless steel brake cables. Extra leverage is required to cut the cable, but the tool survives the abuse comfortably.
A little larger, but really nicely made and designed, are the Leatherman Squirts and Micras. Both are classic combinations of size, weight, and functionality IMO.

thanks all!
I'd get him the Alox Rambler if it wasn't quite so expensive
I had been looking at the IDL tools and I do rather like them sadly they're a bit more than $5 here.
Syph: I don't quite understand how a Manager can be too big but hey ho. I locked his house up recently because he was out and I was leaving work, and he couldn't get back in because he rarely carries keys

I know that when I was looking for a replacement for my utilikey, the Gerber curve was a really good fit for me. it was nice and rounded, not quotes long as my rambler ( thicker though), and had the all important bottle opener, Phillips, eyeglass screwdriver trifecta that seems to be lacking on all but the most classic tools like the micra. it may be worth a shot!
