Minimalism / madness ...
on: April 23, 2008, 10:14:57 PM
Descent into minimalism/madness . I have toyed with the idea of just packing a Wegner SI , and a pair of 4" Snap On slip joint pliers .

If this experiment works , what will become of all my other toys , a wow is me !

That would be a very capable, minimalist combination.  If you try it, good luck!

I personally would want a few more tools.  I would miss the phillips driver, saws, etc.

Well there's a bit of controversy regarding what SI means ::)

I thought it was Soldat Infantrie, but Terry or Grant (or one of the other sakaphiles) :)

Hang on, I think you will find that we decided it could mean either Soldat infantrie or Standard issue actually.  :P

I've never tried the Regular pliers + SAK combo but it seems like it would actually be a lot more useful to me, especially with spring loaded pliers. Problem is that most pliers just don't have the sexy/cool factor that comes with the purchase and carry of a multitool.

There's always the trade forums... :D

I think I'm a maximumist...I've been EDCing TWO multis for over a week now, plus the other pockets full of stuff...

How do you plan on carrying the "regular" pliers?  Just in your pocket?

A problem with slip joint pliers is that they usually lack a wire cutter.  A common variety long nose pliers cannot grip hex head bolts well.

This FELO    Combination Pliers is interesting because it has a head similar to a multitool with a wire cutter and teeth to grip bolts.

The Snap On 35CP 4" slipjoint pliers have a nice 1/4" induction hardened and forged cutter . I have used them as a baby linesman's plier in tight spots . Klien makes some nice small needle noses , as does Crescent and Chanellock . I think I'll give it a whirl for a month or so , and see how it works .
