3 part butterfly opener - plier and scissor heads
on: June 18, 2013, 09:16:22 PM
A rough drawing for an idea I had a long time ago. This seems a suitable place to deposit this thread.

The basic idea is that unlike current butterfly opening MTs, where it contains pliers, or sometimes, scissors; this would have 3 parts, opening one side would reveal pliers, the other side; scissors.

An interesting suggestion which has been put forward before is for the 'handles' on either side to be similar to the current Wenger Ranger series fold out scissors/pliers handles. While that would eradicate the ability to put other tools on the item, it would decrease its width and complexity.

Unfortunately late for work, and on your ideas unsubscribe tomorrow. (we obviously do not have 3D printer for fast, beautiful demonstration of ideas)

Maybe you could use that Wenger Ranger idea, but instead of putting them in separate layers, making the tool quite thick, maybe put them "across" of eachother (like in a vic 58mm)? Would make it wider, but less thick, which is also something to think about.. Let me mess around with paint, a bit...

Edit: added pic, smurf, I fail with paint

bmot-in your case, no room for an extra tool in the proposals Raukodur, with little discussion.

I like the plier and big Scissor idea and the idea Livan brought up might have it´s advantages.
Maybe a butterfly obpening Plier and a foldaway Scissor like on teh Wenger Business Tool or teh Buck x-tract for example?

Your basic idea of both, heavy duty scissory and a plier head is quite appealing, but i think you would need to compromise in either strength or create a quite big tool.

Raukodur idea, to create a new shape of the tool quickly and cheaply using a set of already producing clamping heads. Real designer thinks or how to combine the clamping head or pen tool.

I'll post this here for reference. Not ideal but its proof of concept on a smaller scale.

Very interesting and unique mods!

So the thought here is that in one layer, you have the pliers at one end and the scissors at the other end. And the handles for each are on either side of this single layer.

Careful where the pivot rotation is on your pliers. Looks like your disengaged, folded in plier head will prevent the engaged head from opening.

There is merit to the idea just needs some thought on function.

you want a clarification in such a simple sketch? Well, at the words, imagine that the clamping heads are oval hole in connection with the arms. Play in the right direction is chosen as the compression of excessive motion, a leaf spring formed by a cut in the handle.

Metropolicity is right. Look at your design again. You can't open the pliers. The motion of opening the pliers also compresses the scissors to a more closed position. Neither of the two can be opened.

Everything works, usually in the classic design of the parallelogram, the only thing you need to lengthen sections of the tool axis to the handles for greater divergence of sponges.
Below I describe a method of mobility in another plane of the axes tool-handle. Translator can not right?

Yes but in parallelogram the pivots should move to the sides to compensate for the opening. Here the pivots remain in place so the sides also can't move.

Apparently the translator ...... Imagine that the axis of the tool holder for the tool in the passive position has two ploskostyah.A for the active tool is tough. And it works. (I did the model)

Not what I had in mind. The point is that even with large pliers and scissors, they fold away to allow the tool to stay compact.

On livan's design they both rotate on different pivots so they both could be folded away at the same time.

I'd still love to see the model though.

(referencing the head design on previous page...)The head design on this turns a 'Mr. Pinchy' into a 'Mr. Mangly'. Imagine the skin of your palm crammed into those scissor blades while working the pliers. Interesting idea, but I think it needs to be dropped.

Agreed!

I feel bmot's suggestion is currently the strongest. In order for it to function is would require an S or Z shaped "backspring" running across opposite corners and offset pivots. Also, there's nothing to stop that being repeated in subsequent layers to allow almost full length tools to be incorporated such as knife/saw/file/drivers. If well planned, it might even be possible that the length of the pliers and shears could exceed 50% of the overall tool length and slightly overlap when stowed with the spring running between them

Indeed, that´s what I was thinking, practically a Wenger Ranger-like design, where the other tools/blades could be in other layers.

What if the Plier/Shears layer is just left alone with a configuration similar to the Bear Jaws/Swisstool with both external handles having a Wave like fold for outside opening tools?
